Master the heroes of The Lord of the Rings Online! Get detailed guides on Boromir, Faramir, Eomer, Theoden, Eowyn, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin, including their abilities and best strategies.

Hey there! Welcome back to our guide for The Lord of the Rings Online. In this section, we're diving deep into some of the key heroes you'll encounter, focusing on their unique abilities and how to best utilize them. We'll cover heroes from Gondor and Rohan, plus our favorite hobbits!

Boromir

Boromir's skills are a bit more focused, as he didn't have as much material to draw from in the original story. His Horn of Gondor is a lifesaver when you're facing a huge wave of enemies, giving you precious time to regroup or pull your heroes out of a tight spot. Plus, his passive Leadership ability buffs nearby allies with bonus damage, armor, and fear immunity. It's a smart move to keep him near the center of your army to maximize this aura.

The Hobbits (Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin)

We're grouping the hobbits together because their skills are identical, and honestly, you won't be using them for heavy combat much. They're usually there for leveling up or specific mission requirements. For keeping them alive, stick to their Throw Rocks ability; it's a ranged attack that levels them up way faster than their swords. Since they're so slow, they often get left behind or don't reach enemies before others take them out. To keep them safe in battle, group them with your archer units so they don't get overwhelmed.

Gondor Heroes: Faramir

Faramir is a really versatile hero, especially considering his cost. He can switch between being an archer and a knight, making him adaptable to almost any situation on the battlefield, much like Aragorn. While his archery isn't quite Legolas-level, he can still hold his own once he's leveled up. As a knight with his Leadership ability, he can really tear through enemy lines when grouped with your knight battalions. Think of him as a slightly less powerful Aragorn and Legolas combined.

  • Abilities (Level obtained):
  • Wounding Arrow (1): A powerful shot that can take down most units in one hit and deals 50% damage to Nazguls. Only available in Ranger mode.
  • Toggle Sword/Bow (1): Switches Faramir between sword and bow stances.
  • Ranger/Knight (4): Allows Faramir to switch between Knight and Ranger modes.
  • Leadership (6): Passive ability granting a leadership bonus to nearby troops (increased damage, armor, and fear immunity).
  • Captain of Gondor (7): Provides a 50% experience bonus to units within his area of effect.

Rohan Heroes: Eomer

Eomer is your go-to Rohan hero for most of the campaign until Helm's Deep. He shines when you put him in his own group and keep your other Rohirrim in a separate one. He's great for leading raids and can even patrol alone to level up. I often use him to draw enemies out of their camps while my other Rohirrim attack. His resource-gathering ability isn't as crucial later in the game when your economy is booming.

  • Abilities (level obtained):
  • Leadership (1): Passive ability that buffs horsemen and allows them to gain resources for each unit they kill.
  • Mount/Dismount (1): Lets Eomer get on or off his horse, each with its own pros and cons.
  • Spear Strike (6): A powerful spear throw with a long cooldown. Make sure it hits a crucial target!

Rohan Heroes: Theoden

Theoden joins you around Helm's Deep and is most effective when grouped with your other Rohirrim. This way, his Glorious Charge ability, which you should probably set to auto, affects the maximum number of units. I prefer keeping him mounted so he's always with my army. His Leadership ability also provides bonuses to horsemen.

  • Abilities (level obtained):
  • Glorious Charge (4): While mounted, Theoden and nearby horsemen take 10% less damage during the skill's duration.
  • Mount/Dismount (4): Allows Theoden to mount or dismount his horse.
  • Leadership (4): Passive ability granting horsemen bonuses to damage and armor.
  • King's Favor (6): Increases the experience gained by nearby units.

Rohan Heroes: Eowyn

Eowyn is quite handy, especially in multiplayer. Her Disguise ability lets her blend in with Rohirrim riders, allowing you to sneak up on enemy heroes and take them out with her powerful Smite ability. This strike is so strong it can nearly one-shot a Nazgul! I usually keep her mounted and grouped with my Rohirrim archers for added protection and to benefit from her leadership bonus.

  • Abilities (level obtained):
  • Mount (3): Allows Eowyn to mount or dismount her horse.
  • Shield Maiden (5): Grants Eowyn a 55% armor bonus.
  • Disguise (4): Eowyn can disguise herself as a regular Rohirrim rider.
  • Smite (built-in): A very powerful projectile strike that should be used on high-priority targets.
