CHAPTER I: THE BEGINNING

Learn the combat basics, execute enemies, and survive the first chapter of Ryse: Son of Rome. Master sword attacks, shield bashes, parries, and ballista combat.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
After gaining control of Marius, learn the combat basics: Press X to attack with your sword, and Y to bash with your shield. Use the d-pad to select perks and press A to parry attacks.
  2. 2
Fight barbarians on the bridge. Damage them until a skull and crossbones appears, then pull RT to initiate an execution. Press X when their bodies are outlined in blue, and Y when outlined in yellow.
  3. 3
As you advance, use the Kinect voice command "Fire volley!" or hold LB to call for arrows. Regroup and order your soldiers to take defensive positions at the doors.
  4. 4
Get behind the ballista and fire flaming arrows at charging enemies. Aim for explosive barrels for additional damage, or shoot boiling pots to create a temporary fire wall.
  5. 5
When archers appear, shoot the explosive barrels on their scaffolding. Marius will automatically disengage from the ballista to proceed to the front doors.
  6. 6
The game will then introduce upgrades. You can use points earned through gameplay or purchase gold to buy upgrades. Perform an upgrade as instructed before opening the doors.
  7. 7
Proceed to the next door and defeat the enemies in the lobby. They are more aggressive, so be prepared to parry and watch for attacks from behind.
  8. 8
Engage the Barbarian Warlord. He will surround the area with fire, limiting maneuverability. Wait for him to swing his flaming weapon, then use the left stick to roll away (press B) and land a few hits.
  9. 9
Continue dodging his attacks and striking when he misses. When an execution prompt appears, pull RT to perform it. Successfully executing the Warlord completes the first chapter.
Tips
  • Mastering the parry (A button) is crucial for survival against aggressive enemies.
  • Utilize the environment, such as explosive barrels and boiling pots, to your advantage during combat.
  • Pay attention to enemy attack patterns to effectively dodge and counter.
  • Don't forget to perform an upgrade when prompted to enhance Marius's abilities.

CHAPTER II: S.P.Q.R.

Master Ryse: Son of Rome's Chapter II, 'S.P.Q.R.' Follow our guide to defeat barbarians, utilize combat mechanics like breaking defense and perfect strikes, and find all collectibles.

Alright, we're diving into Chapter II: S.P.Q.R. in Ryse: Son of Rome. This section is all about getting you comfortable with the combat system, and it kicks off with a sparring match against Marius's old man. Don't let his age fool you; he's still got some fight left in him and will teach you the ropes.

When you're facing enemies with shields, like your dad here, the first thing you need to do is press Y to break their guard. Do this a few times, and then just keep following his lead. He'll eventually ask you to break his defense and then land a few 'perfect strikes.' A perfect strike is basically an attack that lands right after you've broken their defense – timing is key!

For countering attacks, you'll want to wait until your dad is *almost* hitting you. You'll know it's time because his whole body will flash green. That's your cue to hit A. Once the sparring is done, get ready, because you and your dad are going to be ambushed by some barbarians!

After you fend off the first wave of barbarians, follow your dad into the courtyard. A quick cutscene will play out (and you'll snag an achievement!), but don't get too comfortable – more barbarians are coming your way. From this point on, it's mostly about sticking with your dad and battling through waves of enemies as you move through the city.

While you're busy slaughtering barbarians, remember to upgrade Marius. Also, keep an eye out for new perks; two more will be introduced in this chapter. You'll also learn about the 'Focus' ability. To use it, tap RB. This will slow down time, letting Marius unleash a flurry of attacks on your enemies with little to no resistance.

Don't be afraid to experiment with the different perks and swap them out as needed. Just be mindful of Marius's health, especially if you don't have the health perk equipped – it's easy to lose track and end up losing a life.

As you navigate the city, keep an eye out for objects and barricades that have a blue cloth draped over them. This blue marking means you can climb over or onto it, so use these to your advantage for traversal.

Besides the constant fighting, there are also collectibles to find in this chapter. You'll spot glowing green bodies lying around – examine these for 'letters from the past.' You'll also find a couple of 'vistas' that offer insights into Roman history and also count as collectibles. Just keep an eye out for anything glowing green!

Speaking of glowing green things, you'll also be introduced to projectiles. When you first encounter them, press A to pick them up. To aim at distant enemies, hold LT. Then, hold RT to focus in on them. When the arrows turn red, release RT for an instant kill. You can also use them quickly against close-range enemies by tapping LT and then immediately tapping RT.

These projectiles come into play in a small puzzle. You'll need to lower a bridge for your father. When you reach it, turn around; directly opposite the bridge, you'll see an area to climb up. Make your way to the rope holding the bridge up and throw a projectile at it. Shortly after, you'll need to push a cart. Just get behind it and press Y to interact and move it.

You'll notice the cart is highlighted in yellow. This color-coding, similar to combat prompts, indicates that you need to press Y to interact with it. Objects in the environment that require interaction for puzzles are color-coded to match the face buttons on your controller.

There will also be some boards you need to break using sword swings, which is done with the X button. X is also used to cut ropes, allowing Marius to progress. And if you're really hurting for XP, you can smash open pots and vases scattered around for a little extra boost.

CHAPTER III: TRIAL BY FIRE

Follow our detailed walkthrough for Chapter III: Trial by Fire in Ryse: Son of Rome. Learn how to defeat barbarians, archers, and warlords, and master the catapult.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
After landing on the beach, move through the ruined ship. Your objective is to reach the tower and lower the harbor chain.
  2. 2
Continue through the ship's ruins until you can drop down and engage barbarians. Focus on defeating them quickly to maintain your Roman soldiers' survival.
  3. 3
This section introduces the heavy attack (hold X or Y). After defeating the barbarians, proceed until archers begin firing.
  4. 4
Keep an eye on the arrow indicator. You can roll to dodge arrows or tap A to deflect them just before impact. You can also grab projectiles and throw them back at archers from cover.
  5. 5
Proceed to the tower. When you reach the flag, press A to form your soldiers into formation. Hold A to block incoming fire arrows and advance.
  6. 6
Inside the tower, grab more projectiles and engage enemies at the counter-weight. Multiple waves of barbarians and archers will attack. Kill them to maintain Roman numbers. Destroy the wooden counter-weight pieces and defeat any new enemies.
  7. 7
Enemies similar to the Barbarian Warlord from Chapter I, but armed with axes, will appear. Some attacks can be deflected, but roll away when their bodies are highlighted red.
  8. 8
On the next beach, fight through barbarians and kill their archers. Climb over the barricade and eliminate archers on rooftops.
  9. 9
Once your own archers arrive, order them to "FIRE VOLLEY!" to thin out the barbarians. You can choose to have them focus on enemy archers or help with melee combat, depending on your needs. Defeat all enemies in this area.
  10. 10
Move with your soldiers to the catapult tower, engaging mixed groups of archers and melee barbarians.
  11. 11
At the base of the tower, kill archers above the bridge and throw projectiles at the rope holding the bridge. Once the bridge is destroyed, cross it, ascend the stairs, and reach the top of the catapult tower.
  12. 12
Man the arrow turret and eliminate enemies on the opposite tower. Avoid catapult fire (indicated by a ground radius) and defeat all incoming barbarians. Use Kinect voice commands like "CATAPULT FIRE!" and "FIRE VOLLEY!" when prompted.
