Follow this guide to complete 'The End' section of Return of the Obra Dinn, identifying Captain Robert Witterel and his role in the tragic events.
From where you start, turn to your left, and go further aft to where the skeleton is. Turn a bit to your right, and go toward the skeleton. The Memento Mortem should appear to your left. Press spacebar to activate the watch. And away we go... into the first memory.
The End, Part 1
On entering this, the first memory of your journey, the screen goes black, and at this point, the first word you hear is: "Captain!" Remember this one. You'll hear more words and threats about breaking down a door "and [taking] more than those shells." Shells? Well, that's pretty unusual. At that point, the voice of another man, whose identity is deduced as the Captain, answers something about "[taking] exactly what I give you." From the look of things, the Captain looks like he's in a bad mood, as if he's not himself lately. As soon as you hear his gunshot, the scene cuts to a freeze-frame of a man in a uniform getting shot in the chest... in close-up! Look at that... a guy clutching the axe that he threatened to use to break down the door, only to drop it when he got shot next to another guy. That's pretty unsettling.
From where you stand, you can zoom in to the man's face. Right now, it appears blurry, as he is not identified yet. Press Tab while zooming in to open the Life at Sea sketch. You'll pay attention to the tutorial words you see, and as they will tell you, you don't have the means to identify him just yet. If you click on the number of memories, the tutorial words will indicate that "memories where this person appears can be navigated from here," before bringing up memory list, indicating what page the person's memory first appears in, followed by an option to show the memories on the Deck Map, the name of the "Life at Sea" sketch the person appears in, which chapter the person disappeared or died in, and an option to "bookmark all memories where they appear for quicker navigation". As soon as the words are finished, exit the illustration. First off, you need to find the first person you see with the identity of "Captain". From where the guy was shot, follow the path of the bullet by turning to a 360-degree angle and trace the path to the man who fired the gunshot at him. Go aft to the man blocking the way to his quarters, and zoom in on his face. You'll notice that his face is clear the first time you see him, so open the sketch with Tab. You need to deduce the man's identity. Remember, the guy who got shot called him "Captain", so he can be easy to identify (or, as we like to call it, ID), so go ahead. Use your mouse to bring up the profile, hover over the "Unknown" tag above his head, and click on it. You'll get more tutorial words on who he is and what his rank is, since his face is unblurred, and the words will tell you that there were 60 people onboard the ship, and that you need to deduce who they are and what their fates are by gathering up clues, but it won't be easy. Some identities will only be revealed by process of elimination, so try to remember that. With all that said, click on the "Unknown" tag again. It will bring up a list of names, and #1 should be the first thing you see, so click on it to ID him as " Captain Robert Witterel". With all that said, press Tab to exit.
Back in the memory, you can pass the time by examining two other men whose IDs we don't know yet. Notice the guy climbing up to the poop deck? He must be planning a mutiny against the Captain or something, so remember that. Once enough time has passed, the memory will fade out, and the logbook will appear and open up to turn the pages to the final chapter, revealing a gun on Page 123 along with the map part of where the ship is (Page 124), a bit east of the Azores but slightly north of the Canary Islands. It will then turn to Pages 125-26, and reveal Part 1's status and situation outside the Captain's Quarters: the victim's profile and the audio log on the left page, and the location of the corpse and how many others were present at the scene of the crime. The victim's profile is the one you want, so click on it. It will bring up a picture with the word set that reads, "This unknown soul..." and "...met an unknown fate." When you click on "This unknown soul..." the tutorial words will indicate that you don't have enough evidence yet to ID him (if you didn't zoom in on him in the memory and bring up the sketches), before stating that the fate "may be known and can be entered now." You have to have already seen what his fate is in order to list it, so click on the "unknown fate" part and list it as "shot" and "gun" (located in the third page of the fates list). The third part will reveal the words "...by an unknown attacker." I bet you already know who the attacker is, don't you? Click on the "attacker" part, and ID "Robert Witterel" as the shooter. Once that's done, exit the book to return to the memory. One fate down, 59 to go.
As soon as you exit, you'll hear a door unlock, and that door should be the exit out of the memory. It should be located to the ship's bit-far-fore-and-starboard side of the shooting victim, so go through the door and exit the memory to return to the present-day _Obra Dinn_. When you return, you'll find that the door to the Captain's Quarters to the ship's aft is now open, apparently by magic, which means there could be more skeletons to find. Curiouser and curiouser, to quote _Alice in Wonderland_. From where the first skeleton is, turn to your left, and you can now enter the quarters by going aft past the Passenger Cabins. There, you'll find another skeleton, this time wearing some sort of seaman's garb, located near the turned-over table at the ship's aft-and-starboard corner. This must be the same garb the man next to the shooting victim wore back in the first memory; in fact, you've got another memory to explore.
