You're back on the Main Deck of the present-day Obra Dinn. Your Memento Mortem now acts as a spirit compass pointing north, indicating a final showdown. Release the spirit with spacebar and follow it port-and-fore towards the poop deck. It will swirl around the rigging, fly fore and starboard, then swirl around the net and go fore before landing aft-and-port of the crank. This forms a hologram of Second Mate Edward Nichols. Approach his hologram to bring up the Memento Mortem and activate it with spacebar to enter his final memory.

    The memory begins with Nichols' voice. You hear shouts about lifeboats returning and orders to recover them. Nichols becomes frightened and pleads with an assassin not to shoot, offering treasure. Despite his pleas and a warning, the assassin, a foreigner who doesn't understand English, shoots Nichols in the chest. You are now walking on water on the port side of the Obra Dinn, with the ocean appearing frozen in time.

    Get close to Nichols and examine the entry wound. Trace the bullet's path back to the assassin on the Gun Deck. The assassin is revealed to be the last Formosan guard from Chapter II, Part 3.

    Notice Mr. Club Victim in the window of the Fourth Mate's Cabin, aft of the Formosan guard. Approach this window. Zoom in on Mr. Club Victim and bring up the sketch with Tab. His profile will become clear. Since he is in his own cabin next to the guard, identify him as the Fourth Mate.

    Click on his profile and ID him as "Fourth Mate John Davies" (#5) in the "unknown soul" slot. This action will reveal the shooter of Olus Wiater and the identity of a young future survivor.

    Exit the sketch. From Davies' location, turn 360 degrees and walk towards the Formosan guard's chest and the unconscious mermaid in front of Nichols.

    Walk aft of Nichols' lifeboat, turn right, and go to the second lifeboat northwest of it. Here you will find the bloodied Bun-Lan Lim and two other unconscious mermaids. The mermaid furthest aft is clutching its shell. This is the same mermaid that would later kill Diom, the Formosan guard, Thomas Sefton, and indirectly William Wasim.

    The scene implies Nichols orchestrated the removal of the mermaid captives, their shells, and the Formosan chest from the lifeboats to enable the mermaids to summon the Crab Riders and the kraken, leading to the demise of most of the crew.

    Return to where Nichols was shot next to the dead captive and observe the scene until the memory fades.
