Master of Knifing Enemies

This guide details how to defeat common enemies using only the knife in Resident Evil (1996), focusing on critical hit techniques for each enemy type.

Zombies

Found in the first four levels, zombies can bite or spit acid. To avoid acid, tilt your head back, then blow into the microphone (if applicable) to send it back. General attacks involve swiping up/down, left/right. For a critical hit, wait for them to prepare a bite and slash. A critical hit is also possible when they tilt their head back to spit acid: before their head moves forward, perform a vertical swipe. Timing is crucial; swiping just before they spit will not result in a critical hit.

TIP: Against groups, use horizontal slashes to stun. Once downed, use vertical swipes for extra damage before they recover.

Dogs

Exclusive to level 4, dogs attack by leaping to bite or grab your arm. They howl once or twice before leaping, which is your cue to stab them. All dog attacks are critical hits, but they are challenging to defeat.

Crows

Encountered in levels two and three, crows peck aggressively. Counter by swiping with your knife (vertical or horizontal). For a critical hit, wait for them to fly to the front of the screen, count to one, then swipe. This often results in a critical hit and can cause the crow to hit other enemies, granting credit for another critical hit. Avoid this tactic with multiple crows at once due to timing difficulties.

Naked Zombies

These function similarly to regular zombies. Swipe them until defeated. One appears as a boss in level one.

Hunters

Hunters typically run up and swipe with claws. Occasionally, they jump back and screech, indicating an aerial leap attack. Be prepared to dodge. After being hit, they may jump back and then forward. While general swipes are effective, vertical slashes are recommended due to their height. Critical hits are easy: wait for them to raise their arm back and slash. This defeats them in one hit.
