Learn how to issue commands to your squad in Elite Dangerous with this guide to Real Time Commands, covering follow, stop, move, hey, and hold fire.

During missions in Elite Dangerous, you can only directly control one soldier at a time. However, you can issue basic instructions to your squadmates using Real Time Commands. For more complex maneuvers, the In-Game Map can be used (see section below). Real Time Commands are quick and simple for immediate needs.

On the Dreamcast controller, press the L Trigger + Up on the D-pad to bring up the Real Time Commands menu. Then, press the corresponding button for the command you wish to issue.

CommandButtonEffect
FOLLOW MEButton 1The other soldiers will follow you, covering you and each other. They will adopt your stance (standing, crouching, or prone).
STOPButton 2The others will cease movement and halt their current action (like following). They will survey the area. This is useful for stealth, preventing AI companions from revealing your position prematurely. It can also help correct AI pathing issues when they get in your way or wander off.
MOVEButton 3The other soldiers will advance ahead of you. This command is rarely used due to unpredictable AI behavior.
HEY!Button 4This command can be used to get a lagging soldier's attention or to tell a squadmate to move out of your line of fire.
HOLD FIREButton 5This command is intended to prevent other soldiers from firing before you do. However, it is often ineffective. For stealth approaches, it is recommended to use the 'STOP' command and advance ahead of your squad.
