Base Game Mementos: 117 notes are available in the base game. These are primarily found through exploration and are sometimes tied to specific quests or story choices. An example is the 'Newspaper Article - October 11th, 2020', found in the Prologue area during the 'Pilgrim's Path' quest, or alternatively in Old Villedor. Another is the 'Letter - Goodbye Letter', a story-related item also found in the Prologue area. 'Paradise Lost, Book IV' can be found in the Prologue area's church or in the Central Loop. GRE reports, such as 'GRE Quartermaster Pike #1', are found in underground parking lots in Houndfield during the 'The Ball is in Your Court' side quest. Renegade Reports, like 'The Carriers Guild Assault', are located in Old Villedor.

Chapter 2 Mementos: 14 mementos were added in patch 1.6.

Bloody Ties DLC Mementos: 32 mementos were added with the Bloody Ties DLC. The 'Connoisseur' achievement is awarded for finding 36 of the 37 Carnage Hall collectibles (32 mementos and 4 tapes). These include 26 mementos in Carnage Hall and 6 in Villedor.

The Walking Dead Event (2023): 7 mementos were added in patch 1.11. These were available from July 2023 to July 2024, initially as event rewards and later purchasable via Pilgrim Outpost.

Firearms Update (2024): 6 mementos were added in patch 1.15.

Patch 1.27 (2026) Mementos: 33 mementos were added. 10 were obtainable from purchasing the MTX bundle for 1000 DL points, requiring players to grind for them. 23 were related to past events, including the Infected Outbreak event (February 12–March 9, 2026) which involved enemy loot drops and community rewards, and the Year of the Horse event (February 17–24, 2026) which involved opening lootboxes.
