Part 1
Black Book Ogden's Story walkthrough: Find gear in Village of Derwent, get the Lantern from Desert Cave, and prepare for the Mountain Tunnel.
- 1After a brief backstory, you'll witness Prince Marlon's coronation, which is attacked by skeletons Biggs and Wedge. Defeat them using the fight command.
- 2A Dark Knight appears and attacks Ogden. This battle is unwinnable; the Dark Knight will defeat you and flee with the prince.
- 3Ogden is sent to a woodsman's cabin. Speak to the woodsman to sleep and recover health.
- 4The next morning, the woodsman asks you to complete a task at the cave to the west. He gives you a Wooden Stick (which earns the trophy _High-Tech Weaponry_) and tells you to go to the cave.
- 5Before going to the cave, head to the Village of Derwent to the northeast.
Village of Derwent
In Derwent, you can purchase starting gear. The inn is free. It is recommended to grind outside town until you can afford a Hat (10 Gold) and a Leather Shield (60 Gold). You can also grind for Leather Armor (100 Gold).
Save your game at the church in the northwest.
To work towards the _Well Educated_ trophy, read the four bookshelves in Derwent. Ogden must find the books interesting to count towards the thirty required books during Ogden's Story.
| Weapon Shop | Cost | Armor Shop | Cost | Item Shop | Cost |
| Wooden Stick | 10 | Traveller's Clothes | 30 | Herb | 10 |
| Hammer | 70 | Hat | 10 | Antidote | 10 |
| Axe | 250 | Leather Armor | 100 | Wyvern Powder | 100 |
| Leather Shield | 60 |
Desert Cave
Head west from the village. The cave near the woodsman's house is not the correct one. Continue west to find the Desert Cave near the western coast.
- Inside the Desert Cave, go northwest to find a chest containing 25 Gold.
- To the east, find another chest containing a Herb.
- To the north, find a chest containing the Lantern.
Return to the woodsman with the Lantern. After Ogden explains he is from Castle Wester, the woodsman will let him keep the Lantern. You can now enter the dark cave to the northwest.
Mountain Tunnel
This dungeon features enemies that inflict poison, which damages you after every few steps while moving, not just at the end of combat. You can buy Antidotes or rely on healing with Helios. This dungeon is not very long and is manageable around level fourteen.
An Antidote and a Herb can be found west of the entrance. You can find 30 Gold inside.
- Grind outside Village of Derwent until you can afford a Hat and Leather Shield.
- Read all four bookshelves in Village of Derwent for the _Well Educated_ trophy.
- The Dark Knight battle at the beginning is unwinnable.
- The Wooden Stick is a required item for the _High-Tech Weaponry_ trophy.
Part 2
Black Book Part 2 walkthrough covering Lakehaven, Palace Ruins, and Wester. Find items like the Hammer and learn about Harry the Cave Troll.
- 1Head east to find a chest. Continue north and open the chest along the water to find a Hammer.
- 2Continue north and then head west. Open the two chests to find a Rope and an Antidote. The exit is to the east.

- 9Take the western stairs downwards. Head north to find an Antidote.
- 10Follow the path west, then south. Find a chest with a Leather Shield to the southwest.

- 12Return to the main path and head northeast to find one more Herb. Return to the first floor.
- 13Take the eastern stairs downwards. Head east into the underground caverns.
- 14Continue east at the fork. Follow the path north along an underground lake. To the northeast is a chest with an Axe.
- 15At the north end of the lake, head west to find Harry the Cave Troll. Speak to him to initiate the boss fight.
- 16After defeating Harry the Cave Troll, a scene will play. Return to Lakehaven and go to the healer's house.
- 17Follow the woodsman to Wester.
- 18In Wester, head to the castle to the north and speak with Queen Becca.
- 19After the scenes in Wester, head to the southern end of town and speak to the man on the docks.
- 20Speak to the ship next to him to cross the sea to Bluefin.
- In Lakehaven, you can find books for the _Well Educated_ quest: one in the inn (north), one in the church (west), three in the northern-central building (on bookshelves), and one in the healer's home.
- The swamp before the Palace Ruins will hurt you; move through it quickly.
- You can sequence break by heading to Wester west of Lakehaven to gain access to certain items and gear early.
- Harry the Cave Troll has more health than previous enemies but deals less damage. Use basic attacks and heal when low. He does not inflict status ailments.
- The reward for defeating Harry the Cave Troll is a Rusty Hero's Helmet.
- In Wester, the weapon shop sells an Axe (250 Gold), Iron Sword (700 Gold), and Golden Sword (1250 Gold). The armor shop sells Bronze Armor (350 Gold), Wooden Helmet (100 Gold), Iron Armor (1250 Gold), and Iron Helmet (500 Gold). The item shop sells Herb (10 Gold), Turboherb (250 Gold), Antidote (10 Gold), Honey Drops (100 Gold), Wyvern Powder (100 Gold), and Rope (100 Gold).
- In Wester, you can find books for the _Well Educated_ quest: one in the inn (west), four in the church, and four inside the castle doors on the bookshelves.
Part 3
Black Book Part 3 walkthrough covering Bluefin, Volcano Hideout, and boss fights like The Kraken and The Hellspawn.
Bluefin
In Bluefin, you can purchase various items from shops:
- Weapon Shop: Iron Sword (700), Forged Sword (3000), Golden Sword (1250)
- Armor Shop: Bronze Armor (350), Iron Armor (1250), Iron Helmet (500), Iron Shield (750)
- Item Shop: Herb (10), Turboherb (250), Potato Juice (500), Antidote (100), Honey Drops (100), Wyvern Powder (100), Rope (100)
To progress, speak to the pirate in the club (middle building, northern edge). He directs you to his friend in the bar. After speaking to the friend, you receive Doubloons. Take these to Pirate Adams in the inn, who trades them for a Dirty Magazine. Return this to Pirate Bill at the bar to receive a hunk of Gold.
Take the gold to the locksmith in the town square (southeastern booth along the coast) to get a Golden Key. Use this key on the bouncer for the private club to gain entry and speak to the pirate captain. You will learn that Anders is also in town, having befriended the pirates.
The pirate captain will give you the key to the volcano hideout if you recover his treasure buried east of Wester. You must travel on foot, as warp effects are disabled. Return to Wester, exit the town, and head east into the desert. Locate a darker mountain and step on the area just south of it to find the Pirate Soda. Return to Wester to save, then take the boat back to Bluefin, where an attack will commence.
The Kraken
The Kraken is a boss with physical attacks that deal significant damage but do not inflict status ailments. It hits harder than Harry the Cave Troll, so liberal healing is necessary. Use normal attacks and conserve mana for Healios. Defeating The Kraken yields a Magic Key.
Upon returning to Bluefin, go to the private club. The pirate captain reveals the Magic Key is for the volcano hideout and that The Kraken stole it. She knew the pirate soda would provoke The Kraken. After this, heal at the inn and save at the church before proceeding.
For the _Well Educated_ achievement, find two books in the church (western side), two in the inn (eastern wall rooms), and two in the private club (either side of the pirate captain's throne).
Volcano Hideout
The Volcano Hideout is northwest of Bluefin. Take either of the two bridges west of the town; both paths loop and lead to the entrance. Inside, follow the path and collect items from chests: a Turboherb and Honey Drops from the first two. Continue through the lava to stairs, descend, and cross a bridge. At the path split, go north, then west, and ascend stairs to find a Golden Sword and a Rope. Return down, go east, then east again on the southern path. Take the next northern path to find four chests containing a Rope, a Turboherb, an Antidote, and a Wyvern Powder. Head south and follow the path until it splits again; go southeast to find an Iron Sword.
To reach the next section, return to the first bridge, head south, cross the western bridge, and proceed west. At the screen's edge, go south into a new area. Follow the path. At the north-south split, climb the northern lava ship for a Rope. Go south. On the second ship, find two chests: one with a Turboherb, the other with 1000 Gold.
Continue south and descend stairs. Head north to find a demon on a platform. This demon, sent by the Dark Knight, guards the shield, just as Harry guarded the helmet. The boss battle begins after dialogue.
The Hellspawn
The Hellspawn has a fireball spell that deals about twice the damage of its physical attacks. Maintain health at double the damage of its physical strikes. It also possesses a healing spell. Upon defeat, it drops the Rusty Hero's Shield.
After defeating The Hellspawn, return to Bluefin to heal and save. Enemies become tougher south of this point; aim for at least level twenty before venturing further. You are then ready for Crescent Cove.
Crescent Cove
In Crescent Cove, shops offer:
- Weapon Shop: Iron Sword (700), Forged Sword (3000), Golden Sword (1250)
- Armor Shop: Iron Armor (1250), Forged Armor (3500), Forged Helmet (price not specified)
- Item Shop: Herb (10), Turboherb (250)
Part 4
Guide to Crescent Cove and the Dark Lord's Earthly Palace in Black Book. Find the Miner's Trinket, defeat The Faceless Death, and get Rusty Hero's Armor.
Crescent Cove is located southeast of Bluefin. Travel south along the coast from Bluefin, cross the bridge to the west, and continue south until you reach the desert. Head east through the desert until you encounter mountains, then travel south from the mountains until you spot the port town on the coast.
Crescent Cove serves as the final village for Ogden's Story. Before proceeding, consider completing any necessary upgrades, as two more dungeons remain, bringing you closer to the game's end.
Upon arriving in town, you'll learn of a cave-in at the mine. When ready, head north to the mine entrance.
For those seeking the books required for the _Well Educated_ trophy, two can be found in the church in the northeast section of town. Another two are located in the chamber of commerce building on the central hill. The inn also contains two books, one in each room. Finding all books up to this point will award the trophy.
Crescent Mine
- Head directly north from the mine entrance to find a chest containing 500 Gold.
- The path to the west is blocked by a skeleton you cannot defeat. Instead, proceed east and descend the stairs to the bottom floor.
- From the bottom floor, go east to find a Wyvern Powder.
- Continue south and then west to discover Forged Armor.
- Return east and follow the path along the room's edges. You will pass two chests containing an Antidote and a Turboherb.
- Continue following the path to a small opening. Follow this path north to find two chests at the end. One contains 2000 Gold, and the other holds the crucial Miner's Trinket.
- Return to the stairs leading back up, but head north before reaching the ground floor to find two more chests containing a Golden Sword and a Turboherb.
Return to Crescent Cove and locate Sally the Flower Girl in the house in the northwest. Speak with her to give her the Miner's Trinket. She will give you Sally's Flowers and ask you to return them to the mine. Enter the mine and proceed north, following the path west all the way to the skeleton. Speak to the skeleton to give him the flowers, granting you access to the room behind him.
After Harry and Sally's relationship issues are seemingly resolved, proceed into the next room. Follow the long path, which may involve numerous random encounters, until you reach the edge of the mountain overlooking the sea. Speak to the enemy situated there to initiate the boss encounter.
The Faceless Death
The Faceless Death is a boss that specializes in inflicting status ailments, particularly poison. Be prepared to frequently cleanse yourself. Its spells deal erratic damage, ranging from the twenties to the seventies, making it difficult to predict. Maintain your health above eighty and attack when opportunities arise. Stocking up on items is advisable, as battles can be lengthy, especially when the boss begins healing for more damage than you are dealing.
The boss does not possess the armor you seek. Ogden recalls that the miner might know its location. Speak with the miner, who reveals he found it earlier and hid it in an oasis in the desert west of Crescent Cove. Travel to the desert and search for a small lake. The Rusty Hero's Armor can be found by walking to the spot directly south of this lake.
Return to Crescent Cove and visit Sally's shop. Inside, you will find the woodsman. He will instruct you to head east out of town and follow the road to the dark palace at the end. This is the final dungeon of Ogden's Story. Purchase any necessary supplies before embarking on the journey east across the bridge.
Dark Lord's Earthly Palace
The road splits after the bridge into northern and southern paths, both eventually leading to the dark palace in the north. A save point, in the form of an obelisk, is located to the southeast. Enemies in this area are significantly stronger than those encountered previously. You may choose to grind for experience near the save point and use Warpios to return to Crescent Cove for supplies if needed.
It is recommended to be at least level twenty-five before entering the dark palace, as the enemies within are even more formidable than those on the world map leading up to it.
- Enter the dark palace and proceed north through the narrow halls until you reach a larger room.
- Doors to the west and east lead to chests guarded by Biggs and Wedge, respectively. Begin with the western hall and confront Biggs at its end.
Biggs
Biggs's sole attack is an insult directed at Ogden's baldness, which deals significant damage. You will likely spend considerable time healing. If your health drops below eighty, cast Healiara. Otherwise, use your basic attack. Defeating Biggs yields a Jail Key.
- Open the chest behind Biggs to find a Rope.
- Return to the main room and proceed to the eastern side.
- Follow the eastern hallway and stairs to reach Wedge. Along the way, collect the Forged Sword from a chest.
Wedge
Wedge's combat is identical to Biggs's, with the key difference being that he attacks first each round. Plan your strategy accordingly, ensuring you can withstand a direct hit before making your own move.
- Stock up on healing items and status ailment cures before entering the Crescent Mine and the Dark Lord's Earthly Palace.
- Consider grinding to at least level twenty-five before entering the Dark Lord's Earthly Palace due to the increased difficulty of enemies.
- Save frequently, especially before boss encounters.
- Miner's Trinket
- Jail Key
- Forged Sword
- Rusty Hero's Armor
