Hey there! So, you've stumbled upon the Gatekeepers in Abiotic Factor, huh? They're a pretty mysterious bunch, acting as antagonists and mercenaries for GATE. Think of them as the shadowy figures behind some of GATE's more... unusual expeditions into other dimensions. They really become a major player in the _Dark Energy_ update, where things get complicated with a three-way conflict between you, the Gatekeepers, and the Order. It seems like while they're supposed to be security for GATE's dimensional stuff, they might be cooking up their own plans now that the Order has invaded the GATE Cascade Facility. ## Background Basically, the Gatekeepers were hired by GATE to do a couple of main things: snatch up Immurement Subjects and take care of any threats to GATE's operations. Even though they officially work with the regular GATE folks, their weird, occult vibe makes even the most serious scientist a bit uneasy. Here's a kicker: they actually control access to the Intrados/Shadowgate facility in Finland. Yeah, even high-up GATE administrators need special permission to go there. All this secrecy has led a lot of GATE researchers to suspect the Gatekeepers are up to something on their own. ### Beliefs Their religious practices are a bit of a mashup. They seem to worship a few known deities like _Yig_, _Anu_, _Shamash_, _Baal_, _Sagat_, _Tiamat_, and _Arkus_. It's not totally clear what they believe, but _Arkus_ might have been a mortal who achieved godhood by jumping into something they call the Abyss. They also throw around New Age terms like the "Seven Rays" and the "Summerland." Some GATE scientists think they're not really religious, but just use these symbols and entities to get things done. ## History GATE started using the Gatekeepers as contractors sometime after the company was founded back in 1967. Their main job was to protect GATE's extra-universal exploration teams, but they also fed Dr. Annette Garrick, the founder of GATE, information that really sped up their research. Before 1993, the Gatekeepers managed to capture this godlike entity called IS-0117. They think it's part of a bigger network of beings trying to take over the multiverse. GATE leadership ordered them to lock it up at the Intrados facility in Finland. ### Events of _Abiotic Factor: Dark Energy_ Things really go sideways in September 1993. The Order, a militant religious group, starts attacking GATE facilities everywhere. The Gatekeepers get orders to push through the Order's forces and secure the GATE Cascade Reactor sector. This sector is super important because it powers the whole facility and the WG-Intrados way gate, which is the only way into the Intrados facility and, you guessed it, where IS-0117 is being held. Even though the Gatekeepers hold off the Order, a new scientist (that's probably you!) trying to escape the GATE Cascade facility accidentally breaks into the Intrados facility and frees IS-0117. This lets the entity contact the rest of its network. In the chaos that follows, the Gatekeepers fall back to the GATE Cascade Residence Sector, which is now freezing over.
