Hey there, Commander! Let's talk about what you'll actually be doing out there on the battlefield in XCOM 2. These are your Mission Objectives, the whole reason you're dropping boots on the ground. You'll be directing your squad of soldiers in turn-based combat against ADVENT and alien forces, trying to achieve specific goals. Missions generally fall into two big categories: Generic and Key. Generic missions are the bread and butter of your campaign. They don't directly push the main story forward, but they're crucial for keeping ADVENT off balance and gathering resources. You'll encounter several types of these: * Guerilla Ops: These missions are your direct response to ADVENT's Dark Events. Think of them as counter-terrorism operations. You'll usually have a few of these pop up at once, and you'll need to choose which ones to tackle. * Recover Item: Sometimes you'll need to grab a specific piece of tech or intel. * Hack Workstation: Get your best hacker in there to steal ADVENT data. * Destroy Alien Relay: Disrupt their communications network. * Protect Device: Hold the line and keep a vital piece of equipment safe. * Council Missions: These are often more critical, sometimes involving high-value targets or sensitive operations for the XCOM Council. * Rescue VIP: Get a friendly important person out of ADVENT's clutches. * Extract VIP: Safely extract a VIP, usually someone who has information or can help the Resistance. * Neutralize Enemy VIP: Take out a key ADVENT or alien leader. * Supply Raids: These are all about hitting ADVENT where it hurts – their supply lines. * Supply Raid: Direct assault on their supply depots. * Landed UFO: Take down an alien craft and salvage its tech. * Recover ADVENT crates: Grab those valuable supplies before they can be used against you. * Alien Facility Assaults: Straightforward assaults on ADVENT or alien strongholds. * ADVENT Retaliation Missions: These pop up when ADVENT decides to hit back at the Resistance. You'll need to defend civilian areas or Resistance bases. Key Missions are the ones that drive the story. You can't skip these, and they often involve major plot points and unique challenges. * Operation Gatecrasher (Tutorial): Your very first mission, designed to teach you the ropes. * Recover the ADVENT Power Converter (Tutorial): Another early mission to get you familiar with objectives. * Sabotage ADVENT Monument (Operation Gatecrasher): A key objective in the early game. * ADVENT Blacksite Assault: A critical mission early in the campaign. * ADVENT Forge Facility Assault: Another important facility to raid. * Codex Data Coordinates Investigation: Uncover vital intel about the aliens. * ADVENT Network Tower Assault: Disrupt their command and control. * Alien Fortress Assault (Operation Leviathan): A major undertaking against a significant alien stronghold. There are also DLC Missions, like the Alien Nest Investigation (Operation Regal Beast) and Lost Towers Investigation (Operation Last Gift), which add even more variety. And don't forget Avenger Defense! This is a special mission that happens when ADVENT launches a major assault on your mobile base, the Avenger. You absolutely cannot afford to lose this one. Quick Tip: Loot left on the ground with a pickup timer of 1 or more will be automatically collected after the mission. However, if you have a forced evac, you won't get any alien corpses or regular loot, so plan accordingly!
