Master the Mine Layer and Shock Rifle in Unreal Tournament 2004. Learn tactics for defense, offense, and the deadly Shock Combo.
Walkthrough
- 1Defending Mines: When heavy vehicles with long-range weapons approach, send mines towards their path and hide. Once your mines detonate (indicated on the lower-right of the screen), lay more at your feet and send them out. Do not break (cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects)) until it is safe or you are forced to. This strategy also applies to defending your power core, as enemies must pass through a chokepoint.
- 2Defending Power Nodes: For Power Nodes in open areas, lay mines beneath and slightly in front of the Node. Stay away from the battle, find a hiding spot with a clear view of the Node, lay your mines there, and send them. Concentrate on protecting the immediate vicinity of the Node.
- 3Offensive Mine Layer: Lead a swarm of spider mines with or slightly in front of an attacking force. Two teammates in a vehicle can assist. Focus on protecting teammates from being swarmed while they handle the attackers.
- 4Mobile Mine Layer: Cover a flat-topped vehicle with spider mines (launch them on top) and drive it into action for a self-defending vehicle at close range.
- 5Shock Rifle Primary Fire: Fires a blue beam with pinpoint accuracy. Deals 45 damage vs. people and 40 damage vs. vehicles. Has a rate of fire of 20/10s, uses 1 ammo per shot, and has a max ammo of 50. It's an instant hit, a beam, has pinpoint accuracy, causes knockback, and can initiate a Shock Combo. It pushes people back, slows light vehicles, and throws air vehicles. It can also destroy objectives in Assault (AS).
- 6Shock Rifle Secondary Fire: Fires a slow-moving, medium-sized blue plasma ball that explodes on contact. Deals 40 damage vs. people and 45 damage vs. vehicles. Has a rate of fire of 20/10s, uses 1 ammo per shot, and has a max ammo of 50. It's a projectile, causes knockback, detonates upon impact, has an unlimited fuse, splash damage, and is needed to execute a Shock Combo. It also pushes people back, slows light vehicles, and throws air vehicles.
- 7Shock Combo: Initiated when the Shock Rifle's primary fire beam hits its secondary fire plasma ball.
- 8Grenade Launcher Bombs: You can stick Grenade Launcher bombs on spider mines for extra damage, but this slows the mines down.
Tips
- Stay alive as long as possible, as spider mines cannot function when you are dead.
- The Shock Rifle's primary fire is effective at long range with good damage and rate of fire. If you are accurate, it can take down a regular enemy in just 3 shots.
- Avoid using the Shock Rifle's primary fire mode up close, as it is difficult to aim and dodge simultaneously.
- Use the Shock Rifle's primary fire knockback to push enemies off ledges or into hazards, especially useful for carrying objectives.
- The Shock Rifle's primary fire can halt light vehicles' forward movement but does minimal damage and is hard to hit fast-moving vehicles with. It is effective against Raptors.
- The Shock Rifle's secondary fire plasma balls are slow, allowing multiple to be on screen simultaneously, making them useful for close-quarters combat.
- A plasma ball can be shot down by another player's Shock Rifle primary fire, resulting in a Shock Combo.
- The UT like model for the Shock Rifle has been redesigned to be fat and purple, but you can switch back to the old model in the “Weapons” tab of the “Options” menu.
- People and air vehicles hit by the Shock Rifle (except the Shock Combo) will be covered by purple electricity for a second.
