Learn about unit promotion, town rebuilding, and recruiting in this Unicorn Overlord Unit and Item Guide.

Greetings everyone! I wanted to welcome everyone to my Unicorn Overlord Database for Units and Items. Before we continue on, I just want to say thank you for reading my work and I hope it is helpful to your journey through this great game. I want to say that I tried to be as complete as possible, but there is a chance that there are some things I missed, so don’t be alarmed if you found something I didn’t. Lastly, all opinions on here are my own and should not be taken as absolute truth, I wanted to include them as a jumping off point for players to make informed decisions about how they could build their own armies.

I want to give you a few general tips before we get into the meat of the guide.

Tips
  • Promote units as soon as you can and keep going until everyone is done. The way combat in this game works, you’re going to get much more value out of a promoted class over two unpromoted classes in a unit. I focused on unit expansion over promotion when I played, and I really regret it. Battles were harder for me and didn’t get easier again until I prioritized the promotions again.
  • Rebuild towns and station guards for as many as you can. Running the errands to rebuild a town gives you a steady supply of honors and cash and the guards you station give you items at a fairly regular rate. Definitely worth doing, even if later in the game you have to hire mercenaries just to stand guard for you.
  • If you’re looking to recruit everyone, be sure to spare people whenever you get the chance. A vast majority of characters that join you either come from sparing fallen foes or having conversations with units in battles (which are usually HEAVILY signaled to you).
  • Picking a unit leader is important so pick carefully. Unit leaders determine movement type (ground, flying, or cavalry) and what kind of supports you can do. Generally, you want to avoid using basic Infantry as a unit leader since they don’t give you any additional features for doing so.
  • If you need honors, your best source is probably errands for towns (even auxiliary ones after a town is rebuilt), but if you need experience or gold you want to go with the sigil battles. The sigil fights give you experience books as rewards and the units there are great for racking up gold using the Rogue’s Pillage ability.
  • Some skills are marked with the "LIMITED" tag. This means that is you have multiple skills that would trigger from one event, only one of them will go off. The most common skills with this tag are Cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects) type skills (where you take a blow for an ally), and skills that trigger at the start of combat. Towards the end of the game, the start of combat trigger affects a large number of skills, so I marked those with (LIMITED) in the guide to make them easier to spot.
  • For some character entries you'll notice I put them in brackets with the word "Postgame" before the name. This is used to indicate characters that only join you in the postgame. Generally, I wouldn't plan my units around these characters but it's nice to know they're around for PvP purposes.
