You board the Orient Express mid-travel after circumventing the gendarmerie near Paris. You do not have a ticket and are traveling illegally.

Examine your inventory: a telegram from Tyler Whitney urging you to meet him at Gare de l'est at 1900h, and a newspaper article detailing a fugitive matching your description (Robert Cath) near Paris.

You are located between two train cars. The last car is private and inaccessible. The first sleeping car is accessible.

You may notice a woman leaving the last compartment of the train if you had not stopped to examine your inventory.

Inside the first sleeping car, on a chair, find a copy of L'Illustration (a French newspaper). This contains the passenger list for both sleeping cars, noting Marshal Putnik in room 9 and Mr. Jean Jaures in room I. Jean Jaures was crossed out and died July 31st; Putnik was not. Neither room 9 nor room I exist.

After the conductor reseats himself, you can ask him for Mr. Whitney's compartment (#1). Alternatively, you could have found this information in the stolen Report: "M. Tyler Whitney - Americaine - Paris / Belgrade".

You can also read that the private car at the end of the train belongs to a man called Kronos.

Head to Mr. Whitney's compartment, #1, the last door in this sleeping car.

Upon opening the door, you discover Tyler Whitney has been murdered violently.

Tips

If you do not obtain the passenger list earlier, you can pick it up after the conductor is no longer seated.
If you talk to Mr. Schmidt in the dining room before entering Tyler's compartment, introducing yourself only as Robert, he will go to find Tyler himself. Upon finding Tyler murdered, he will pull the emergency brake, initiating a police investigation and likely leading to your arrest for lack of a ticket and potentially the Ireland murder.
You cannot be present during an official police investigation as you are a wanted man.

Warning: Knocking on doors 5 through 8 will result in Mahmoud, a bodyguard, coming out and yelling at you. Conductor Mertens will urge you to stop. If you continue knocking approximately fifteen times, the game will end, presumably with Mahmoud killing you or you being thrown off the train. This results in a Game Over without a special cutscene (a non-interactive cinematic the game plays automatically).
