Learn how to craft items, open luggage, and set up your first camp in The Forest. Discover essential survival tips for early game progression and resource management.
Walkthrough
- 1Crafting: Right-click any item in your inventory. If it can be used for crafting, it will appear on the central mat. Hover over the cog icon to see recipes. Combine required items on the mat; the cog will turn grey when ready to craft. Consumed items are removed from your inventory (with exceptions).
- 2Opening Luggage: The plane wreckage is surrounded by luggage. Use the Plane Axe to smash them open for minor supplies. The axe requires a specific angle for an overhead smash to break the cases. Alternatively, craft a Weak Spear (2 sticks) to open luggage more easily.
- 3Collecting Supplies: Smash all colored cases found around the map. These cases contain healing items and fabrication materials. Once opened and looted, cases remain open and useless. If contents are not taken, they may respawn. Cases must be hit with a weapon using the correct animation, which can be difficult if they are in water.
- 4Setting Up Camp: Build your first camp near the plane wreckage. The plane serves as an indestructible shelter, rally point, and navigation aid. The crash site offers natural resources and luggage.
- 5Building a Temporary Shelter: Open the Survival Guide, go to the Shelters tab. Select the Temporary Shelter (requires 17 leaves, 14 sticks). Place the blueprint using 'R' to rotate. Press 'E' on the template to automatically add carried resources.
- 6Using the Temporary Shelter: Once built, the shelter has two icons: 'Z' to rest and advance time (heal afflictions, turn night to day), and 'C' to save the game (does not advance time).
- 7Shelter Icons and Markers: Shelters have a visible yellow house icon on the HUD for orientation. Use 'R' to cycle through colors or remove it by cycling to grey. This applies to other structures. Icons do not show on the HUD when underground. Unneeded buildings can be removed by turning their icon grey or smashing them. A temporary blueprint can be used for a HUD icon (yellow hammer) without building, costing nothing.
- 8HUD Icon Bug: If HUD icons disappear after resting ('Z'), press ESC twice to restore them.
- 9Shelters in Caves: Temporary Shelters are crucial in Caves for resting and saving, as logs are unavailable. You can carry enough sticks (with a Stick Bag) to build a Temporary Shelter inside a Cave.
- 10Alternative Shelter: A Hunting Shelter (7 sticks, 6 rocks, 7 logs) can be built, but requires cutting down trees for lumber.
