Dive into Stellaris empire creation! Learn about species traits, homeworlds, government ethics, and origins to forge your unique galactic empire.
Hey there, future space emperor! So, you're ready to jump into Stellaris and forge your own galactic destiny? Awesome! Before you start conquering the stars, we gotta get your empire set up just right. This guide is gonna walk you through all the nitty-gritty of empire creation, from picking your species' looks to deciding their ethics and government. Let's get this done so you can get to the fun part – exploring, expanding, exploiting, and exterminating!
Think of Stellaris as a 4X game: Explore, Expand, Exploit, and Exterminate. Your first big step is building your empire. You get to decide everything: your empire's civics, ethics, government type, and even how the galaxy itself is shaped. We'll cover all these settings so you can create an empire that's truly yours.
Species Settings
First up, let's talk about your species. This is where you define who you are in the galaxy.
Appearance
Your species' appearance is more than just a pretty face; it affects how your Pops (that's your population, the folks doing the work) and your leaders look. Don't worry too much about Pops and Leaders right now; we'll get into the details later. Just know that Pops are your workers, and leaders are your important folks like governors and research officers.
Heads up: some character portraits are tied to specific empire types. For instance, you'll need the Machine Intelligence Authority to use the Machine portrait. The game's character creation panel will usually give you a heads-up if something isn't compatible, often by highlighting it in red.

Species Name
This is where you get to name your people! You'll fill in fields for your species' name, its plural form, and the adjective. For example, Human, Humans, Human. You can also write a biography for your species here. This part is purely for flavor and won't impact your gameplay at all, so have fun with it!
Name Lists
In the Name Lists section, you can pick from a bunch of pre-set names that will be used for your Leaders, Planets, Ships, and Fleets. You can also choose your Ship Prefix, like 'ISS' or 'USS'. This helps give your empire a consistent feel.
Traits
Traits are super important! They give your species unique abilities that affect things like Job performance, how well your species adapts to different planets (habitability), and even stuff like Housing and Amenities usage. If you're feeling a bit overwhelmed and just want to get started, I recommend picking Rapid Breeders, Intelligent, and Natural Engineers. These are all solid positive traits.
Now, here's a pro-tip: picking Negative Traits can actually be a good thing! They give you more Trait Points to spend on the good stuff. My personal favorite negative trait is Unruly. It does affect your Empire Sprawl (we'll cover that later), but the impact is pretty minor, and those two extra trait points are totally worth it.
Homeworld Settings
Next up is your homeworld – the cradle of your civilization!
Name & Class
Here's where you pick your starting Homeworld. The type of planet you choose directly impacts your species' habitability. For example, if you pick a 'Wet' type planet like 'Continental', your species will have 80% habitability on Continental worlds and 60% on Ocean and Tropical worlds. Other types, like Dry and Cold, might only give you 20% habitability. You also get to pick your starting solar system here. If you choose the Sol System, your planets will be named after the ones in our own solar system.
City Appearance
This is purely cosmetic, so just pick the city style you like best!
Empire Settings
Alright, let's get into the core of your empire – its identity!
Origin
Your empire's Origin tells the story of your species' past and often comes with some nice bonuses. Many Origins have specific requirements. For example, the Mechanist Origin requires your empire to lean towards the Materialist ethos. There are also tons of DLC-specific Origins like Syncretic Evolution, Tree of Life, and more. If you're looking for the widest variety, the Federations DLC unlocks the most Origins.
Government & Ethics
This is arguably one of the most crucial decisions you'll make during empire creation. Here, you'll set your empire's Ethics, Authority type, and Civics. What you choose here will dramatically shape how you play the game. For instance, a Fanatic Pacifist empire is completely barred from declaring offensive wars; they can only engage in defensive ones.
You get up to 3 Ethic Points. Just remember, you can't pick directly opposing Ethics, like Xenophile and Xenophobe. You can either pick three common ethics or one fanatic ethic along with a regular one. There's also a special option in the center: Gestalt Consciousness. This uses up all your Ethic Points and really changes how you build your empire and interact with others. It has its own unique benefits, but I generally don't recommend it for your very first playthrough.
Next up is Authority. Your Authority type affects how your ruler is elected and the kind of Civics you can choose. Keep in mind, the Machine Intelligence and Hive Mind Authorities can only be selected if you're going with the Gestalt Consciousness ethos.
Advisor Voice
The Advisor is your trusty companion, warning you about attacks and keeping you updated on research, building queues, and more. By default, the game picks an Advisor based on your empire's ethos, but you're free to choose any voice you like!
Empire Name
This is where you name your empire and its adjective. See that little die icon? Click it to randomize a name if you're stuck!
Flag
Your empire's flag and colors are purely cosmetic, but they're also how your empire will appear on the galaxy map. Make them stand out!
Ship Appearance
Another cosmetic choice here – pick the ship designs that look coolest to you.
Ruler
Finally, you can customize the appearance of your starting ruler. You can also change their title and even your heir's title here.
