Learn how to activate your Face meter for combat perks like health regen, manage your health bar, and understand the Heat system and police pursuit in Sleeping Dogs.

Hey there! So, you're diving into Sleeping Dogs and wondering about some of the nitty-gritty mechanics? Let's break down how combat, health, and dealing with the cops work. It's not as complicated as it might seem at first, and once you get the hang of it, you'll be a force to be reckoned with.

Understanding Your Face Meter:

You'll notice a meter on the right side of your minimap – that's your Face meter. It fills up as you take down enemies, whether you're brawling or shooting. When it's full, it gets 'activated,' giving you some sweet perks. Many of these perks are tied to your Face Level, which is like your overall reputation in the city. The coolest perk, especially early on, is health regeneration. When your Face meter is activated, you'll start healing up!

This is a game-changer in tough fights. If you're low on health but your Face meter is almost full, try to intercept some attacks. This not only blocks damage but can also fill your meter, letting you start regenerating health. It's a smart way to turn the tide of a battle.

Tip: Want to fill that Face meter even faster? Hit up a massage parlor. They offer services that temporarily boost how quickly your Face meter fills.

Health Management:

Your health bar is the red one, sitting to the left of your minimap. In free roam, your health does regenerate, but it usually only goes up to half its maximum. Grabbing some food gives you a temporary buff to heal your entire bar. Plus, you can unlock Face advantages that extend this buff's duration, making it last twice or even three times as long. You can grab food from stalls in the Night Market and from street vendors.

Quick Note: Gobbling down ten different kinds of food or drinks will snag you the 'Foodie' trophy, so keep an eye out for those!

During combat, remember that activated Face meter we talked about? That also gives you a temporary health regeneration boost.

What happens when you die?

If your health hits zero, you die. In free roam, you'll respawn at a medical clinic, but it'll cost you! The bill scales with how much money you have, maxing out at HK$15,000. If you die during a mission, you can restart from the last checkpoint. If you decide not to continue, it'll still cost you money, just like dying in free roam.

Dealing with the Heat:

Even though Wei is a cop, the uniformed officers on patrol don't know that. So, if you start causing trouble – like theft or assault – they'll notice. You'll see blue man icons (patrolmen) and blue stars (police vehicles) on your minimap, each with a blue circle showing their detection range. If they spot you breaking the law, you'll gain 'Heat,' which is basically your wanted level.

Your minimap will flash red, and a number in the top-left corner will show your Heat level. Police icons will turn red and blue, and their detection circles will become red. The higher the Heat level, the more intense the response:

  • Level 1: Foot and car patrols.
  • Level 2: They start shooting.
  • Level 3: Vans join the chase.
  • Level 4: SUVs and automatic weapons appear.
  • Level 5: SWAT teams in armored trucks and roadblocks.

Escaping the Cops:

You can lose the cops by getting out of their red circles or by disabling their vehicles. Shooting out their tires or performing an action hijack can work too, though hijacking might increase your Heat. Once you've successfully evaded them, your minimap will flash green for a bit, but you still need to lay low for a few seconds to completely shake them.

Tip: A big jump off a ramp can help you lose them, or you can always duck into one of your safehouses.

If cops chase you on foot, they might tackle Wei. Be ready for a quick QTE ([Cross]) to reverse the situation and cuff the cop instead! (Though you can usually just mash [X] to break free.)

If you do get cuffed, you'll be arrested and bailed out from the nearest police station, but it'll cost you. Just like medical fees, the more cash you have, the higher the bribe/bail, capping around HK$25,000. Honestly, it might be cheaper to just let them kill you!

The Display Explained:

That minimap in the bottom-left corner shows points of interest. The red bar next to it is your health, and the bar on the right is your Face meter. When the cops are after you, your Heat level pops up top-left. Red triangles above the minimap mean Triad XP, while blue shields mean Cop XP loss.
