Kakuna is the middle evolution, and honestly, it's mostly a stepping stone. Its stats aren't anything to write home about, and its movepool is pretty limited. You'll mainly use it to get to Beedrill. Don't expect it to win battles for you, but it's a necessary part of the evolutionary chain.

Beedrill is where things get a bit more interesting. As a Bug/Poison type, it has a decent Attack stat and can hit reasonably hard. Its Speed is also pretty good, meaning it can often attack first. The key with Beedrill is to use its offensive presence. Moves like Twineedle can hit twice, and Poison Jab (if you can get it via TM) can be great for status. It does have a weakness to Rock, Psychic, and Flying types, so be mindful of that when sending it out.
