Homeworld Mission 11: Sacrifice. Use DFF to protect collectors grabbing core pieces and waste the enemy fleet.
Walkthrough
- 1Send one collector with two DFF (Defense Field Frigates) as protectors to grab the closest first and second core pieces. Send the rest of your collector fleet to start on resources, bringing refineries to assist them.
- 2Research and immediately upgrade the battlecruiser technology. Do not build a second battlecruiser; instead, aim to capture a Vaygr battlecruiser, as they are more powerful. Bring all your destroyers, battlecruisers, all your frigates, and at least 2 or 3 capture frigates to the main wreck.
- 3You will be alerted to an enemy fleet hyperspacing in, consisting of 4-5 destroyers and about 15-20 frigates. The frigates are split into two groups, while the destroyers are usually in one large group with possibly a single destroyer in the other. A carrier and a shipyard (SY) are also present.
- 4Attack the enemy fleet on your terms. Concentrate your destroyers, frigates, and captured battlecruiser (if you have one) on the enemy destroyers. Once the destroyers are gone, easily take out the frigates.
- 5You will be informed about an enemy Vaygr fleet stealing the third core piece. Send all your heavy ships directly to them. Do not worry about radiation, as it is only within 1km of the core pieces; your ships will be fine as long as they do not go near them. This enemy fleet consists of 2 carriers, one battlecruiser, a destroyer or two (depending on your fleet size), and many frigates. Concentrate all heavy firepower on the carrier and any destroyers and frigates. If any ship's health turns yellow, send it back to your shipyard (SY) on evasive orders for full speed.
- 6After the carrier is destroyed, split your forces into halves and attack the remaining destroyers. Before the timer runs out, the carrier will be destroyed, spitting out the third core piece. If you need time to build or research, delay retrieving the piece; otherwise, send a collector to retrieve it.
- 7You have a choice: either engage the enemy shipyard (SY) and its escorts located to the top-left of the Bentus wreck, or skip them and proceed directly to retrieving the core fragment to win the level. The enemy shipyard is defended by a few destroyers, frigates, and fighters. You can capture the Vaygr battlecruiser here if you prefer its firepower over the Hiigaran equivalent.
Tips
- An alternate strategy suggests sending a dreadnaught, battlecruisers, destroyers, and 4 collectors towards the third (furthest) core piece early on. This fleet will be halfway there when you receive the warning about radioactivity. Use maxed torpedo frigates and a few pulsar corvettes to protect the left flank. Take down the hyperspacing carrier immediately; without it, the enemy cannot secure the cores. Afterwards, focus on the battlecruisers and destroyers. The shipyard becomes an easier target without reinforcements.
- Another player notes that a second carrier may hyperspace in after the first is destroyed, which is also an easy target.
- The Vaygr battlecruiser that hyperspaces in with the carrier may possess a hyperspace module. You can dock up to 5 fighter/corvette groups to this captured battlecruiser, and combine them with other ships to form a strike force for surprise attacks in later missions, such as hyperspacing next to a Vaygr SY to attack it and its escorts before they are ready. This can be more effective than relying on lesser wreckage for resources.
- One player reports that the Vaygr battlecruiser they captured did not have a hyperspace module, though the shipyard did and could not be captured.
