Mementos (Light Motes)

Discover the hidden Mementos in Gris's Prologue! This guide walks you through finding the first Memento and completing the 'Denial' challenge.

Alright, so you've just started Gris and she's in a bit of a rough spot, collapsed after a fall. Don't worry, this is normal! To get her moving, just nudge the left joystick to the right. As she walks forward, the world around her will start to come back to life.

She'll eventually collapse again after a foggy patch, but this time, when she gets up, she'll be a bit quicker and gain the ability to jump! It's like she's finding her feet again.

Five Stages of Grief: Denial

Now, here's a cool little secret. Remember where Gris first landed? If you backtrack a tiny bit to the left, you'll see a small pillar and a collapsed statue nearby. Walk up to the statue and let Gris collapse again. Here's the important part: don't touch the controller at all. Seriously, just let her be. If you do it right, you'll get a notification on the screen saying you've completed the 'First Stage of Grief: Denial'. It's one of five such challenges you'll find throughout the game, so keep an eye out for these!

Constellation Bridges

Keep moving forward from where you got the 'Denial' challenge. The world gets a bit rocky, and you'll climb a big rock. Once you hop over the edge, there's no going back the way you came.

You'll soon come across a small, pulsing light – a Star. Walk up to it, and Gris will absorb it. This little light will become her companion. Keep going past where you found the first Star. Look for some crumbling platforms, the first one marked by a tree with upside-down triangular leaves. Hop across these, and keep platforming left until you see a black mountain rising to your right.

As you start climbing this mountain, you'll find a second Star. Grab it! Not too far after that, you'll see a huge gap between structures. Your little Star companions are key here – they can create bridges for you. You'll need three of them to cross this gap, so don't worry if you can't cross it yet.

Luckily, there's a third Star nearby. Head up the stairs to your left, and you'll find a large, leaning tower. There are zigzagging stairs you can use to reach the top. Once you're up there, your two Stars will automatically create a bridge to a smaller tower nearby, where you can collect the third Star.

Memento #1

Before you head back to the gap, there's a collectible here. Climb the first set of stairs on the leaning tower, then jump left. You'll see a symbol on the ground – this is one of the game's Mementos. Just walk over it to activate it.

There are several Mementos in each chapter, and the first chapter only has two. You'll grab the second one later. For now, just having this first one is great!

Head back to the gap, and your three Stars will form a bridge. Cross it and keep going right until you reach a crumbling stone hand. A short cutscene will play, a burst of red will appear, and you'll get a notification: Red - A Color Has Been Brought Back. You can check out all your challenges in the Pause Menu; some have special requirements, but these 'color' ones pop up as you finish each chapter.

The Temple and the Constellations

Continue on until you reach a huge staircase leading up to what looks like a temple. Right at the top, on the back wall, there's a drawing of a leaning tower with two circles and a dot. If you found that Memento earlier, one part of it should be lit up. You'll get the other one later.

Keep going until you reach a blood-red tree. Your little Star companions will leave you here to form a constellation in the sky. You'll have to go on without them for now.

On the other side of the red tree, at the top of the stairs leading down, you'll see more symbols on black walls. These mark the chapters and their Mementos, which you'll find as you play.

Head down the stairs and keep going right until you start sliding down a steep, red mountainside. Once you land on flat ground, just keep heading right. You'll arrive at a black tower. As you get near the top, Gris will automatically finish the climb, and a cutscene will play. And that's the end of the prologue!
