Thematic Interpretation Guide

Guide Gris through her crumbling world. Learn to move, jump, and collect stars to rebuild her strength and understand the Five Stages of Grief.

Hey there! So, you've just started Gris and found yourself in a world that's falling apart, huh? Don't worry, we'll get through this together. Right now, Gris is a bit shaken up after a long fall, and all you can really do is nudge her forward. Just point the left joystick to the right, and she'll start walking. As she moves, you'll notice the world around her slowly starting to take shape again. Keep moving forward!

Eventually, Gris will collapse again after passing through a misty area. When she gets up this time, she'll be able to move a bit faster. And guess what? She's learned to jump! She's as light and agile as a bird now. Take a moment to get used to her new movement.

Five Stages of Grief: Denial

Now, here's a cool little secret: after you get the jump ability, you can actually backtrack a little to the left. See that small pillar near where Gris first landed? Just past it, there's a collapsed statue. Walk up to it, and let Gris fall and get up on her own. Super important: don't touch the controller at all during this. If you do it right, you'll see a little pop-up on the screen saying you've completed the 'First Stage of Grief: Denial'. There are five of these stages to discover in the game, each with its own little challenge, so keep an eye out for them!

Constellation Bridges

Alright, let's keep moving forward. The world gets a bit rocky from here. You'll climb a giant rock, and once you leap over the edge, there's no going back the way you came. Keep going until you spot a small, pulsing light – that's a Star. Approach it, and Gris will absorb it, gaining a little companion. You'll need these!

Continue past where you found the first Star. Look for some crumbling platforms, the first one marked by a tree with weird, upside-down triangular leaves. Jump across these platforms to the left until you see a black mountain rising to your right. Start climbing it.

Not too far up the mountain, you'll find your second Star. Grab it! You'll soon see why these companions are so important. The game will draw your attention to a large gap between structures. It looks impossible to cross, right? Well, those pulsing lights you've been collecting can help!

You'll need more lights to bridge this gap, and luckily, there's a third one nearby. Head up the stairs to the left and make your way to a large, leaning tower. There are zigzagging stairs you can use to reach the top. Once you're up there, your two little companions will automatically create a bridge. Use it to reach a smaller tower nearby and collect your third Star.

Memento #1

Before you head back to the gap, there's a collectible here. Go up the first set of stairs on the leaning tower, then jump to the left. You'll see a symbol on the wall – this is one of the game's Mementos. Touch it to activate it. There are Mementos scattered throughout the game, and the first chapter has two, though you'll need to find the second one later. For now, just grab this first one.

Now, return to the gap. Your three companions will form a bridge. Cross it and keep heading right until you reach a crumbling stone hand. A short cutscene will play, showing a burst of red. You'll get a notification that you've completed a challenge: Red - A Color Has Been Brought Back. You can check your progress on these challenges in the Pause Menu; the 'color' ones are usually awarded after completing each chapter.

The Temple and the Constellations

Continue on until you reach a grand staircase leading up to what looks like a temple. Right at the top, on the back wall, you'll see a pictogram showing a leaning tower and two circles with a dot. If you found that Memento earlier, one of those symbols should light up. You'll find the other one later on.

Keep going inside. When you reach a blood-red tree, your little star companions will leave you and form a constellation in the sky. You'll have to go on without them for now. On the other side of the red tree, at the edge of the stairs leading down, you'll see more symbols on black sections of walls. These mark the game's chapters and have their own Mementos to find as you progress.

Head down the stairs and keep going right until you start sliding down a steep, red mountainside. Once you're back on flat ground, continue right until you reach a black tower. As you get close to the top, Gris will automatically finish the climb, and another short cutscene will play. And that's it – you've completed the prologue!
