The police in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City are a constant threat, with their presence escalating as your wanted level increases. Understanding how the wanted system works is crucial for survival and successful mission completion.

Wanted Level Mechanics:

1. The wanted level is indicated by stars, ranging from one to six. The more stars you have, the more aggressive and numerous the police response will be.
2. Committing crimes, such as running over pedestrians, shooting, or stealing vehicles, will increase your wanted level.
3. The police will actively pursue and attempt to apprehend you when you have a wanted level. Higher wanted levels bring in more powerful vehicles and tactics, including helicopters and SWAT teams.

Reducing Your Wanted Level:

• Pay 'n' Spray: The most common method is to drive into a Pay 'n' Spray location. This will repaint your vehicle and immediately remove one star from your wanted level. You can only use this once per wanted level.
• Hiding: If your wanted level is low (1-2 stars), you can sometimes lose the police by breaking line of sight and hiding in alleys or behind buildings for a short period.
• Cheats: While not recommended for a first playthrough, cheat codes can instantly remove your wanted level.
• Safehouses: Entering any of your safehouses will also remove your wanted level.
