Explore Dragon Ball Legends game modes including Z campaign (story mode), VS battle, and SP battle. Learn about stages and characters.
- 1Z campaign (Story Mode): This mode features 8 stages that follow the Dragon Ball Z storyline.
- 2Stage 1: Vegeta's arrival. Fight Nappa, then Vegeta. Controlable characters: Gokou, Gohan (young), Piccolo, and Kulilin.
- 3Stage 2: The Ginew squad. Fight Gurudo, then Recoom. Afterwards, battle Baata and Jiisu simultaneously, followed by Ginew. Controlable characters: Gokou, Gohan (young), Kulilin, and Vegeta.
- 4Stage 3: Battle on Namek. Fight only Freeza. Controlable characters: Gokou, Gohan (young), Piccolo, Kulilin, and Vegeta.
- 5Stage 4: Assault of the artificial humans. Battle Artificial humans #19 and #20, then fight #'s 16, 17, and 18. Note: If you change characters during this section, Artificial human #16 will leave the battle. Controlable characters: SS Gokou, Gohan (young), Piccolo, Kulilin, SS Trunks, and SS Vegeta.
- 6Stage 5: Cell's challenge. Battle Cell and two Cell JRs simultaneously. Controlable characters: SS Gokou, SS Gohan (young), Piccolo, Kulilin, SS Trunks (Saiyajin battle armor), and SS Vegeta.
- 7Stage 6: Majin Buu's creation. Fight Dabura. After hitting him with 2 meteo attacks, Vegeta becomes possessed and joins Dabura as Majin Vegeta. After defeating Dabura, Vegeta returns to your team as Majin Vegeta. Then, fight Majin Buu. Controlable characters: SS Gokou, SS Gohan (teenage), Goten, Young Trunks, and SS Vegeta (for the first part of the first battle, and again against Majin Buu).
- 8Stage 7: Battle of the Buus. Fight Majin Buu, then Super Buu joins the fray. Controlable characters: SS3 Gokou, Goten, Young Trunks, and Piccolo (for the first fight against Majin Buu). When Super Buu arrives, SS3 Gokou leaves and Gohan (teenage) replaces him. Goten and Young Trunks fuse to create Gotenks.
- 9Stage 8: Final battle of the Z fighters. Super Buu is the first opponent. After defeating him, he turns into Kid Buu for the final battle.
- 10VS battle (Versus Mode): A mode for competitive play.
- 11SP battle (Ranking Mode): This mode unlocks after you beat Story mode (Z campaign) on any difficulty level.
- 12Option: Access game settings.
- The game is fast-paced and can become hectic, but becomes more manageable as you learn the mechanics.
- Control can feel tighter on the Sega Saturn version, while the Playstation version offers prettier graphics with transparent effects and less blocky visuals, despite some UI annoyances like an annoying bar on the left of the character select screen and load screens.
- Meteo attacks differ between the Sega Saturn and Playstation versions for the same characters.
- Characters can be knocked through obstacles like mountains and trees.
- The game takes place in the air or hovering just above the ground, with dust swirls appearing at the characters' feet.
- The screen focuses on the character you are using in one-player mode.
- Characters will navigate around obstacles they contact while moving, but trees can be destroyed by fireballs.
Part 2
Dive into Part 2 of our Dragon Ball Legends guide! Learn about Versus, SP, and Z Campaign modes, character switching, and unlockable fighters. Master every battle!
Alright, let's jump into Part 2 of our Dragon Ball Legends journey! We're going to cover some of the core battle modes and how to get the most out of them. It's not just about fighting; it's about understanding the systems behind the battles.
First up, let's talk about Z Campaign mode. This is where the story unfolds. You'll be controlling characters like Gogeta in the initial fight against Super Buu. Once he's down, Gogeta splits, and you'll be playing as SSJ Goku and SSJ Vegeta against Kid Buu. Keep an eye out: if SSJ Goku gets hit by a 'meteo attack,' he'll revert to his base form. Also, if you lose either Goku or Vegeta during the Kid Buu fight, Majin Buu will join your team – a nice little boost!
During Z Campaign, you can swap characters on the fly using the Z button (Saturn) or Select button (Playstation), as long as you have reserves. This brings up the Story mode character select screen, and while you're deciding, the computer takes over your team. It's a great way to strategize, and you'll even see different characters pop up to comment on the action!
Beating the Z Campaign unlocks SP Battle mode, which is a ranking battle mode. As you encounter characters in the Story mode, they become playable in Versus battle mode. On the Saturn, after finishing the last battle, you can replay any of the eight battles by navigating your save files and pressing left or right.
Next, we have Versus battle. This is your standard versus mode where you can pick any characters you've fought in Story mode. You can choose 1, 2, or 3 characters for your team (hit A on Saturn, O on Playstation when done). Just remember, you can't pick the same characters as your opponent! Unlike Z Campaign, the screen here doesn't scroll. There are three ways to play:
- 1 Player vs 2 Player: Go head-to-head with a friend.
- 1 Player vs Computer: Test your skills against an AI-controlled team.
- Computer vs Computer: Pick your teams and watch the CPU battle it out.
When two players are fighting, the controls for scrolling characters and targeting opponents are reversed to match their on-screen portraits.
Now, let's get into SP Battle mode. This is the ranking mode. You're given specific characters to use against computer-controlled opponents. You can't choose your own team or your opponent's team, and you can't substitute or withdraw characters mid-battle. This can be a bit frustrating if the AI-controlled member of your team isn't pulling their weight! There are a total of 30 battles in this mode. On Saturn, after completing SP Battle, you can replay any of these 30 battles by accessing your save files.
Here's a look at the SP Battles:
- Piccolo VS Gohan(young)
- Nappa VS Vegeta
- Vegeta and Nappa VS Freeza
- Freeza and Ginew VS Vegeta, Gokou and Nappa
- Jiisu and Baata VS Ginew, Recoom and Gurudo
- Gokou and Jiisu VS Gohan(young), Vegeta and Kulilin
- SS Trunks VS Freeza
- Piccolo VS Super Saiyajin Vegeta
- Artificial Humans #19 and #20 VS #17 and #18
- Artificial Human #16 VS Cell and a Cell JR.
- Artificial Human #17 VS #18 and Kulilin
- Piccolo VS SS Gohan(young)
- Artificial Humans #17 and #18 VS SS Trunks
- Goten VS SS Gohan(teenage)
- Young Trunks VS Majin Vegeta
- Piccolo VS SS Gohan(teen)
- SS Gokou and Majin Vegeta VS Goten, SS Gohan(teen), Young Trunks
- Dabura(devil) VS Kulilin and Piccolo
- Artificial Human #18 VS Goten and Young Trunks
- Majin Buu VS Piccolo and Majin Vegeta
- Piccolo VS Gohan(teenage)
- Gohan(teenage) and Gotenks VS Gogeta
- SS Gohan(young) and Goten VS SS Trunks and Young Trunks
- Gokou VS Vegeta
- Gurudo and 2 Cell JRs VS SS Gohan(young) and Gotenks
- SS Gokou and Goten VS SS Vegeta and Young Trunks
- SS Gokou and SS Gohan(young) VS SS Vegeta and SS Trunks(battle armor)
- Cell, Freeza and Vegeta VS SS Gohan(young), SS Gokou and Piccolo
- Majin Buu, Super Buu and Kid Buu VS Gogeta, Gohan(teen) and Gotenks
- Gokou, SS Gokou and SS3 Gokou VS Vegeta, SS Vegeta and Majin Vegeta
A quick note: Super Saiyajin Trunks (in battle armor) appears in battle 27 and Story mode, but he's not selectable. Maybe there's a code for him? It's a shame characters like Yamcha are often left out of the playable roster in these games. I think battles like the one against Nappa would have been way more interesting with Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and Chao-Z included!
Finally, let's look at the Options menu. Here you can adjust sound settings (Stereo/Mono), set the difficulty (Normal, Super, and what seems to be 'Master'), and configure your controller. The button layouts differ slightly between Saturn and Playstation, so make sure you're familiar with yours:
For Saturn (A=Accept, B=Cancel):
- Towards opponent
- Away from opponent
- Block
- Attack
- Fireball
- Power up
- Bring up character select screen (story mode only)
- Scroll through player characters
- Scroll through opposing team (target)
For Playstation (O=accept, X=Cancel):
- Towards opponent
- Away from opponent
- Attack
- Fireball
- Power up
- Block
- Scroll through player characters (top to bottom)
- Scroll through player characters (bottom to top)
- Scroll through opposing team (target) (top to bottom)
- Scroll through opposing team (target) (bottom to top)
- Bring up character select screen (story mode only)
Part 3
Master Dragon Ball Legends combat: learn powering up, flying, blocking, fireballs, and character switching. Essential guide for all players.
- 1Controller Configuration: To reassign a button, navigate to the desired setting, press the A (Saturn) or O (Playstation) button, scroll to the new setting (indicated by a yellow line), and press A (Saturn) or O (Playstation) again to swap them. The Playstation version has an additional option under Controller Configure on the Options Menu for Memory settings, which saves/loads automatically if a memory card is inserted at the start (Saturn saves/loads automatically).
- 2Powering Up: Hold the power-up button. Your character will glow and be surrounded by energy. The longer you hold it, the more your character's energy meter fills. You are vulnerable while powering up.
- 3Flying: Hold up on the directional pad to advance towards your opponent; hold down to retreat. Pressing the power-up button while flying towards or away from your opponent makes your character flare with energy and fly faster, leaving an energy trail, but this consumes energy rapidly. Press the power-up button again to revert to normal speed. While using the fast energy boost, double-tap left or right on the control pad to fly in a circular pattern around your opponent, changing the angle of attack and rotating the screen. You can also fly at angles by double-tapping diagonally. For a quick burst of speed, double-tap and hold the control pad in a direction and press the power-up button.
- 4Blocking: Holding the block button blocks all attacks and prevents the opposing team from gaining power. You can only block attacks from your targeted opponent. Attacks from non-targeted opponents cannot be blocked, which is problematic in multi-character fights.
- 5Fireballs (Energy Attacks): Press the fireball button to shoot an energy burst. Holding the button and releasing it launches a barrage of fast energy bursts; the longer you hold it, the more bursts are fired and the more energy is consumed. The character locks aim at the targeted opponent's current position. If the opponent moves into the path of the bursts, they will be hit. If the opponent changes their angle of attack, the bursts may miss, leaving you vulnerable. Fireballs only slightly affect the power meter and are best used for slowing opponents.
- 6Character Select (Z Campaign Mode Only): This brings up the character select screen to substitute or call out a player. The computer controls all other fighters when this screen is active. To select a new character, you must have fewer than 3 characters in use. Highlight the character you wish to remove, press A (Saturn) or O (Playstation), and the word "Chain" will change to "Over." Then, highlight the character you wish to add (who must have "Over" under them) and press A (Saturn) or O (Playstation). "Open" will change to "Chain," and the new character will join the battle under your control. Press the Character Select button again to return to the battle.
- 7Scroll Player Characters: This button cycles through characters on your team. The larger portrait at the top shows your currently controlled character. The Saturn has one button that scrolls top to bottom. The Playstation has two buttons: one scrolls top to bottom, and the other scrolls bottom to top.
- 8Scroll Through Opposing Team (Targeting): This button cycles through characters on the opposing team. In one-player modes, these are represented by large pictures on the top right. In two-player modes, they are small portraits next to your characters' life and energy bars. The character you stop on is the only one your character can attack.
- Be aware that you are very vulnerable while powering up.
- Use the fast flying energy boost sparingly as it consumes energy quickly.
- The blocking system's limitation of only blocking targeted opponents can be frustrating in multi-character fights.
- Fireballs are most effective for slowing down opponents rather than dealing significant damage.
- Ensure you have fewer than 3 characters in use before attempting to substitute a character in Z Campaign mode.
Part 4
Learn advanced combo techniques in Dragon Ball Legends, including warp attacks, knockaways, and chaining moves. Master the connect system for devastating attacks.
This section details advanced combat mechanics in Dragon Ball Legends, focusing on creating and extending combos, known as "connects".
- 1Step 1: The Initial Hit
Press the Attack button (A) when next to your opponent. This initiates a rapid flurry of punches and kicks.
- From this initial flurry, you can perform the following:
- 2Step 2: Flurry Attacks
- Half circle left to right + A: Causes your character to flutter around the opponent, punching and kicking while driving them downward.
- 3Half circle right to left + A: Causes your character to flutter around the opponent, punching and kicking while driving them upward.
- 4Forward, Forward + A: Causes your character to circle the opponent while delivering a flurry of punches and kicks.
- 5From these flurry attacks, you can perform the following:
- 6Step 3: Knockaway Attacks
- Down + A: Knocks the opponent downward.
- 7Up + A: Knocks the opponent upward.
- 8Left or Right + A: Knocks the opponent away in the direction your character is facing.
- 9Directly after a knockaway attack, perform the following:
- 10Step 4: The Warp
Tap the direction you knocked the opponent twice, holding the direction after the second tap. For example, if you knocked the opponent upwards, tap Up twice, holding Up after the second tap.
This causes your character to follow the knocked-away opponent. A streak in the shape of your character will appear between your initial position and where the opponent landed.
- As soon as you are next to the knocked-away opponent, you can press Attack to repeat the initial hit (Step 1), then repeat from Step 2 to continue the combo.
Alternative Combo Starters/Extenders:
- You can start a combo with a Step 3 (Knockaway Attack).
- Repeatedly press a direction on the directional pad and the Attack button to repeatedly slam your opponent against a wall, the sky, or the ground. This must be done very rapidly.
- If you are surrounded by an energy flare while attacking, all your hits will cause the power meter to rise faster.
- All attacks can be strung after grab and attack moves to create combos. Grab and attacks can also be hooked onto other moves, making for very long combos (e.g., a 23-hit combo with SS Trunks has been achieved). To do this, keep the directional pad held (or tap and hold on PlayStation) in the direction of your knockaway move. Your character will chase the opponent.
- Be warned: on higher levels, computer-controlled characters are very good at breaking combos.
- A "high connect" is your personal best combo for that battle. If you achieve an 8-hit combo and it's a high connect, you must perform a combo of 9 hits or more to achieve a new high connect.
- Escapes: You can escape an opponent's attacks by performing an escape move as soon as you see your opponent start their move. Time your escape for when their move pauses before they swing.
