Guide to defeating Olders in Children of the Sun, including Gastrobaron, Planetal, Blackman, Popchan, Devexalt, Mimickun, and Shabby Reaper.
Gastrobaron
Attacks
- Normal: A dense barrage of forks and knives fly in from offscreen, converging on and around you. There is no great strategy found for this attack due to its density and large range.
- Enraged: You must play a Pac-Man-like minigame. This can be tricky if you are not already proficient, but you can tank a few hits by this point. You need to complete this minigame several times to reveal Gastrobaron's chest.
Chest: The bottom left page of Gastrobaron's guide lists several fruits. These fruits will appear in order in the center of the map during his Enraged attack, followed by a key. Collecting all of them spawns the chest, which contains a Miracle Bean. It is best to complete the talk solution sequence first, then antagonize him with random choices to make the Enraged attack happen more predictably before finishing the fight with Open Sesame after getting the chest.
Hint: Where did my memo go? (The hint is located immediately north of Gastrobaron's shell).
Solution: Ina Canape, Bibissoise, Baked Pirameat, Ohppai Pie, Open Sesame
Planetal
Attacks
- Normal: The sun and planets appear and circle the arena at differing speeds. Hugging the very bottom of the arena and moving up only when Pluto or Neptune approach can be somewhat effective, as other planets will then miss you, but the timing can be random.
- Enraged: The same as Normal, but a comet will fly by randomly. It telegraphs its passage beforehand with dust effects. The best strategy is to dodge frequently.
Hint: 1st: Maiden of Blossom Season, 2nd: Measures Righteousness, 3rd: Mirror-gazing Vain Queen, 4th: Star-bearing Hunter (this requires some knowledge of constellations).
Solution: Virgo, Libra, Cassiopeia, Orion, Open Sesame
Blackman
Attacks
- Normal: Deploys a circle of bats around you, with two larger bats. As the circle narrows, the two large bats fly at you, creating an opening to escape. Watch for the large bats to pause briefly and flap their wings harder before charging, time your dodge, and escape through the space they leave.
- Enraged: Circles of bats form around you, rotating slowly while narrowing. Touching a bat causes them to swarm, initiating a spinner (a type of minigame) that you must repeatedly play to avoid being bitten. This attack is very hard to dodge for extended periods and hits extremely hard. The best strategy is to move in a wide circle to avoid running out of room, weaving between each layer of bats. If you get hit, ensure your timing on the spinner minigame is good.
Chest: The chest appears if you avoid getting hit by the Enraged attack for long enough. Completing the solution up to Open Sesame and then repeatedly saying "Blood Type A" can re-trigger the enraged attack, making the chest appear. The chest contains a Miracle Bean.
Hint: Likes to sip Type O blood a few times, then finish with Type A.
Solution: Blood Type O, Blood Type O, Blood Type O, Blood Type A, Open Sesame
Popchan
Attacks
- Normal: The arena switches to a side-scrolling view, and you must maneuver under multiple bouncing balls. This requires precise footwork.
- Enraged: The same as Normal, but with an additional massive, screen-filling ball. Watch its shadow to plan your movements.
Hint: The solution to this Older is found on the back of a sign in the Labyrinth of Many Orders, B9.
Solution: Cascade, Reverse, Fountain, Shower, Flash, Open Sesame
Devexalt
Attacks
- Normal: Shoots multiple bullets in a wave pattern. Positioning yourself directly into the bullets' path just before they change directions can cause them to miss you, but this is tricky to execute.
- Enraged: Fires a fountain of bullets in a tracking arc, with occasional bullets in other directions. Stick close to Devexalt and make a tight circle around them clockwise to avoid being trapped by the bullet fountain, then dodge individual bullets.
Hint: Let's make bold decisions!
Solution: Haircut Please?, Bald And Clean, Thank You, Open Sesame
Mimickun
Attacks
- Normal: Two lines of crates with a single space gap slam together. Position yourself where the space will be. The lines can be horizontal or vertical; adjust back to the center of the arena quickly after each attack.
- Enraged: This attack is nearly identical to the Normal attack, but there is no safe space. You must play the spinner minigame. This hits very hard and can easily defeat you in two hits, even with high defense.
Chest: The chest appears randomly at the beginning of Mimickun's Enraged state, with no discernible pattern. Taking damage does not affect its appearance. It contains a Miracle Bean.
Hint: Did you find the key?
Solution: Use the Hamilton Key, I'll Destroy You, I'll Destroy You, I'll Destroy You, Open Sesame
Shabby Reaper
Attacks
- Normal: Shovels appear from the side of the screen and drift diagonally through the arena while rotating. Dodge these attacks.
- Enraged: Same as Normal, but a pickaxe alternately sweeps half the field. Stay on the opposite side of the arena from the pickaxe.
