Guide to Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse Underground Route Level 4, the Murky Marsh of Morbid Morons. Includes walkthrough, enemy tips, and boss strategy for the Giant Bat.
Walkthrough
- 1Begin the Underground Stages with BK as your guide. You'll enter a marsh area. After whipping a lantern, you'll encounter giant Frogs that spawn frequently. Jump and whip to defeat them, or use the Banshee Boomerang.
- 2Proceed right, rising above the marsh, then jump down into it to continue. The marsh slowly sinks you, but you can exit easily. Reach solid ground to the right; the candle contains a Dagger. Go down the stairs.
- 3In the lower area, time your descent to avoid a Frog spawn. You can go left, but you'll need to defeat a Frog and Mudmen. Mudmen are similar to Zombies. Break the wall to the left for Leg of Werewolf.
- 4Return right, watch for Frogs, grab the candle by the door (points), and proceed through to the next block.
- 5In the next block, collect candles while being wary of Bats. Wait for a moving platform to cross the marsh to the right. Mudmen cannot harm you on the platform.
- 6Jump to a vertical platform to reach a candle with an Axe. You can take the upper path for a Rosary, or the lower path for a large Heart candle (recommended).
- 7Continue right to solid ground. A candle here has Sacred Water. Navigate more mud pits, avoiding Bats and Mudmen.
- 8A candle above the second pit contains a Rosary, which can help with the final section. Quickly proceed through the door to the next block.
- 9In this block, deal with blue swirls, which are Ghost enemies (two hits to defeat). Also, watch for Red Gates of Death (one hit to kill).
- 10After clearing the enemies, collect candles and head right, defeating two more Ghosts before descending stairs.
- 11The first candle down the stairs contains a Pocket Watch. Ahead, a stationary Bat can be defeated with a Banshee Boomerang or Dagger.
- 12Pass a Mudmen pit, which is good for gaining Double Trouble or Triple Threat Blocks. Defeat more stationary Bats until you reach stairs leading down to the boss room.
Boss: Giant Bat
Stats / Weaknesses:
- The Giant Bat splits into smaller bats when hit.
- Sub-weapons like the Banshee Boomerang, Axe, and Dagger are effective.
- Using sub-weapons with Double Trouble or Triple Threat Blocks can significantly speed up the fight.
Phases:
- The Giant Bat splits into two large bats upon being hit.
- These then split into four smaller bats.
- Finally, they split into eight of the smallest bats, which disappear upon defeat.
Strategy:
- Focus on landing hits, as the boss splits with each strike.
- The Banshee Boomerang or Axe with power-ups are highly effective, potentially clearing multiple bats at once.
- The boss often flies between the two sides of the arena. Use the mud pit below to cross if needed.
- Prioritize damaging the boss, even if it means taking some hits, especially if you can hit groups of bats.
- If using only the whip, fast whipping and good timing are crucial for victory.
Tips
- Frogs spawn relentlessly; jump while whipping to counter them.
- Mudmen are easy to kill; they are like mud versions of Zombies.
- The marsh slowly makes you sink, but you can jump out.
- Candles in this level may contain Dagger, Leg of Werewolf, Axe, Rosary, Sacred Water, and Pocket Watch.
- Bats can be a nuisance; be prepared for them.
- Ghost enemies require two hits to defeat.
- Red Gates of Death take one hit to kill.
