Japan, an island nation isolated by geography, developed a unique culture. By the 5th century AD, independent clans (uji) held power, with the Soga clan rising to prominence in 536 AD, producing Prince Shotoku. Power shifted to the Fujiwara clan in 645 AD, who implemented the Taika Reform, attempting land redistribution and taxation. Despite imperial efforts, real power resided with influential families in rice-growing regions, leading to conflict and the rise of the warrior class, the Samurai, akin to European knights. A military government led by the Shogun replaced the nobility by the end of the 12th century.

Samurai adhered to a strict code of loyalty, emphasizing ancestry, honor, and a willingness to die in battle. The Kamakura period (1185-1333) saw a new ruling clan emerge after civil war. Japan successfully repelled two Mongol invasion attempts in 1274 and 1281, the latter aided by a storm.

• Barracks: Full upgrades for Militia line (Militia to Champion), Spearmen line (Spearman to Pikeman), and Squires. Infantry attack speed increases with age. Blacksmith upgrades like Blast Furnace and Plate Mail Armor are available.
