Welcome to my GameFAQs exclusive guide for A Way Out! I had a lot of fun writing this guide. It contains a complete beginning-to-end walkthrough for the game and full image support so that you can quickly find your place in the guide. I also cover achievements, both in the guide and in a respective section at the end. In all, I hope my guide can help you find your way in A Way Out.
Released on 23 March 2018, A Way Out is a co-op only game by developer Josef Fares of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons fame. A Way Out features a prison escape storyline, which is not often seen in video games, and is also only playable in co-op mode, which means that there is always a split screen and that you need a friend to play the game. The story itself is action-packed and gripping, and the game takes around 6-8 hours to complete.
The game has replayability because you must play as either Vincent or Leo. They both have drastically different personalities and dialogue options in conversation. Although some of the roles in the game can be performed by either character, there is something to be said about inhabiting Leo and Vincent because of their distinct personalities.
A Way Out is probably best played as a "couch co-op"; that is, you may have the best experience if you play it together in the same physical location as a friend. That said, you can also play online with a friend as well. What you cannot do is play the game fully single-player because much of the gameplay depends on Leo and Vincent working together at the same time.
I hope you enjoy my guide!

Walkthrough
Your comprehensive walkthrough for A Way Out. Learn how to play as Vincent or Leo, understand their backgrounds, and prepare for your prison break. Get started now!
Alright, let's get you started on your journey through A Way Out! When you first boot up the game, you and your co-op buddy will need to pick who you want to be: Vincent or Leo. It's a pretty important choice because you'll stick with that character for the whole game. If you're on the fence, think about your own personality and your friend's – maybe one of these guys will feel like a better fit.
Here’s a quick rundown on each of them:
- Vincent Moretti, Age 43
- Crime: Fraud, Embezzlement, Murder
- Sentence: About to serve 14 years
- Personality: Rational, Disciplined, Reserved
- Background: After earning a college degree in financing and marrying his high school sweetheart, Vincent settled on a job in banking. Promises of easy money ended up shattering his whole life when he got drawn into the world of organized crime. - Leo Caruso, Age 36
- Crime: Armed robbery, Assault, Grand Theft
- Sentence: Served 6 months out of 8 years
- Personality: Confident, Short temper, Joker
- Background: Leo was brought up in an orphanage and turned to crime early in his life. When stealing a famous diamond, everything went horribly wrong. Now he must get out of prison and set things right for his son, his wife and for himself.
Just remember, no matter who you pick, Vincent will always be on the left side of the screen, and Leo will be on the right. So, choose wisely and get ready to break out!
First Day at the Prison
Complete walkthrough for the 'First Day at the Prison' chapter in A Way Out. Learn how to progress as Vincent and Leo, handle dialogue choices, and navigate the prison.
- 1After the intro cutscene, you control Vincent (left, on bus) and Leo (right, in yard).
- 2As Vincent, exit the bus and follow the line of new prisoners.
- 3As Leo, go through the yard gate by pressing the highlighted yellow button. A cutscene plays.
- 4As Vincent, continue following the linear path with other prisoners; guards will direct you.
- 5Once both characters are inside, you can speak with NPCs.
- 6Vincent Dialogue Choice: At the bench, choose to tell the prisoner "nothing" or "stay strong."
- 7Leo Dialogue Choice: In the yard, choose to tell the prisoner "get used to it" or "you're not on vacation." These choices only affect immediate dialogue.
- 8As Vincent, go to the guard and then the counter to sign papers.
- 9As Leo, let the guard pat you down, then turn left and interact with the prison door to have the guard open it.
- 10After Vincent signs, proceed to Cellblock B and undress near the curtain as instructed.
- 11As Leo, you'll be grabbed by another convict; a guard intervenes. This convict becomes important later.
- 12As Leo, walk across the second floor. You can talk to convicts in cells, with similar binary dialogue options.
- 13Leo gets hosed down and yelled at by the warden. To avoid overlapping audio, experience the warden scene and convict conversations separately.
- 14As Leo, walk to your cell. Interact with the desk, bed, and sink. Leo will write and tally on the wall.
- 15Meanwhile, Vincent's scene with the warden ends. Vincent is naked with clothes.
- 16As Vincent, follow new convicts up the spiral stairs (two floors). A guard will push Vincent into his cell.
- 17As Vincent, interact with the bed to dress. A cutscene plays, ending the day.
- Dialogue choices in this chapter have no significant impact on gameplay.
- To avoid audio overlap when Leo is in his cell and Vincent is with the warden, complete one character's interactions before the other's.
