Master the randomly generated underground dungeons in Yakuza: Dead Souls. Learn about resources, bosses, and rewards for Akiyama, Majima, Ryuji, and Kiryu.
Introduced for each character in their chapter 4 (with Kiryu in the Finale), Akiyama will first meet a scrawny dude named Kine first who tells him about cursed manholes that have started appearing in the city. These are subterranea, randomly generated underground dungeons with tons of zombies. Your goal is to go down as many floors as possible for your character, be it alone or with a partner. If you die while down there, you'll be sent back up to the surface with all of your items returned to you but no experience gained. You also need batteries to keep the light up while you're underground or else you'll be stuck in the darkness. The first time you enter it, you'll receive the The Kamurocho Subterranea Memo.
In the subterranea, you'll have to manage your resources to stay alive. Besides ammo, you'll need batteries (which you can buy from any convenience store) to keep your flashlight powered up and the rooms around you lit up. If your batteries run out, you're stuck in darkness unless you manage to find a rare vendor to buy some more. These vendors are marked if they appear on the first few floors, but the chances of them showing up on the map decreases more and more the further you get, so you'll have to find them yourself if you need supplies such as ammo, healing items for you and your partner, or (as stated earlier) batteries for your flashlight.
After you complete a character's subterraneas, talk to Kine to make sure they register as complete. You'll receive a Design Source for some new armor and you can return to it with any character to run through it again. This is useful if you're missing some Directive completion, especially for the Prototype completion, but you need to remember to have enough gear to keep yourself sustained. Once you've done every single subterranea, you'll get the option to do an EX version of the first one for each character. All this does is make it so every zombie is enraged for no extra experience or item gain so it's not worth doing.
Akiyama's Subterranea 1 - Urban Mythbusting
Goal - 5 Floors
As the introduction to the concept, the first subterranea is pretty simple. The first time you enter it, you'll continue through each floor until you reach floor 5, where you'll have to take out a Monkey Boy as a boss. After that, you'll head to the sewer grate at the end of the floor and you'll have to return to Kine. You'll receive 4,000 experience for this first run.
Akiyama's Subterranea 2 - The Cursed Manhole
Goal - 15 Floors
Return to Kine and he asks you to go back down and explore some more. This time, you'll be heading down to floor 15. Just like before, you'll get a boss fight at floor 5 which will be a Monkey Boy, and at floor 15, you'll have to fight a normal-sized Meathead. Once you're done, you'll receive 8,000 experience and after speaking to Kine again, you'll be done with Akiyama's Subterranea and you'll get a notification to pick up the Yakuza Heroes Past & Present Design Source from Naomi's Palace, which lets you craft the Heroic Binding.
Majima's Subterranea 1 - The Mother Lode
Goal - 10 Floors
Head over to the eastern gate on East Shichifuku Street and you'll see Kine next to the save point. He'll tell you about a huge mine underneath the city that was found by the Master from Yakuza 4 and the manhole is located at Park Alley. This trip will have you get down to floor 10 where you'll fight an Aggro. After you kill the zombies you'll find a dude lying on the ground. Talk to Kine again and Majima will offer to go back down.
Majima's Subterranea 2 - Slumbering Halls
Goal - 20 Floors
This time your goal is floor 20. You'll have the same Aggro battle at floor 10 and on floor 20 you'll have to fight the Arahabaki Prototype A again. After you kill it and head to the end of the floor, return to Kine to give him what you found and he'll run off to be found by your next character. You'll get a notification to get the Battlefield Adventures Design Source from Naomi's Palace, which gets you the ability to craft the Dragon Flak Vest (which is an extremely useful piece of defensive gear).
One thing to note, this is a nice place to grind out Prototype kills for the Directive. If you kill it three total times, you'll have enough Prototype kills to be done with the Directive by the finale before the final boss. I'd recommend waiting until you're playing as either Ryuji or Kiryu since their weapons are much stronger than Majima's shotgun.
Ryuji's Subterranea 1 - After the Ravages
Goal - 15 Floors
Talk to Kine just south of the entrance to the Quarantine Zone and he'll say he needs someone to look for plans that the Imperial Army working on some tunnels under the city during World War 2 and he of course asks Ryuji to explore them. You'll get an Ordinary LED Light which is a nice improvement to your last one. Head to the manhole at the north end of the Hotel District. On floor 15 you'll fight a Diptera and after it's dead, Ryuij will find a diary that you need to bring back to Kine.
Ryuji's Subterranea 2 - A Truth Concealed
Goal - 25 Floors
Return to Kine and he'll say it's only half of the diary, so of course you need to return. You'll fight the Diptera at floor 15 again and once you reach floor 25, you'll face off against the Onraki Prototype and get the other half of the diary as well as a new thing to give to Kine. Return to him so he can depart for your next character. You'll get the notification to get the Zombie Armageddon Design Source to craft the Survivor Training Gear.
Kiryu's Subterranea 1 - Implacable Fate
Goal - 30 Floors
In the Finale, you'll find Kine in the same spot as Ryuji did. Kine will recognize Kiryu and beg him to bring him to Purgatory to finish his job with Kamurocho's underground. You'll automatically head there and meet with the Florist who explains that the tunnels were used by the military during the war. He warns the two of you to stay away f
