Learn how to manage your economy and diplomacy in Total War: Three Kingdoms. This guide covers city development, trade, reputation, and avoiding costly wars to ensure your empire thrives.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Economic Development: Prioritize upgrading Town Halls, Ports, Merchant Ports, Farms, Markets, and Roads. Castles are for recruitment, not income. Keep military garrisons small to reduce upkeep costs.
  2. 2
Sacking Settlements: Use sacking to generate quick cash, especially in larger cities. Be cautious with very small settlements (like Bulgar or Timbuktu) as sacking them yields little money and is destructive to their underdeveloped economies.
  3. 3
Trade: If your reputation is not poor (Dubious/Deceitful) and your diplomat has good influence/charm, charge other factions for trade.
  4. 4
Diplomacy: Most factions will become wary of your expansion. Avoid being at war with more than two factions simultaneously. Reputation (e.g., "Very Trustworthy" vs. "Despicable") and relations are key.
  5. 5
Peace Proposals: Unless enemies offer peace, they are unlikely to accept yours. If they initiated the war and you maintain decent relations, a ceasefire or even forcing them to pay for peace might be possible.
  6. 6
Extortion/Bribery: Extortion attempts, even with a strong military presence, are usually ignored by the AI. Bribery is generally ineffective in Medieval II, unlike in Rome or BI. Having a good reputation with the target faction can slightly improve bribery chances, but it's usually a waste of time.
  7. 7
Effective Diplomatic Actions: Marrying foreign princesses to your men can be effective, sometimes even ending wars. Trade Rights are almost always accepted. Map Information exchanges are also feasible. You can sometimes sell Trade Rights if your faction is large and the other is small.
  8. 8
Deal Negotiation: Be aware that AI offers often favor them. Use the counteroffer button; "Very Generous" ratings usually indicate a deal that benefits the AI more.
Tips
  • By 1260, you should have ample funds if you follow economic advice and section B4. By 1140, funds are usually sufficient unless multiple settlements require concurrent wall/castle upgrades.
  • When at war, especially as Egyptians or Turks, be mindful of potential Crusades if allied with Catholic factions.
  • While the game may show a "Very Generous" balance, the AI may still reject it. Always counteroffer.

Religion:

  • The five religions are Catholicism, Orthodox Christianity, Islam, Paganism, and Heresy. Judaism is not included due to limited distribution.
