Alright, let's get down to building your Sim's first home! After you've created your family and are back on the neighborhood screen, you'll need to pick a spot to build. Click the button in the bottom-right corner (it looks like a family with an arrow pointing to a house) to head to the lot selection.

You can buy a lot that's empty, or one that already has a house on it. Honestly, I prefer building my own place from scratch because it's usually cheaper. The more Sims you have in your family, the more money you'll have, so you can afford a bigger lot. But if this is your first time, don't make it too complicated!

If the lot you have your eye on is already occupied by a family or a house, don't sweat it. You can clear it off! Just click the bulldozer button at the top of the screen. Your cursor will change, and then you can click on the lot. If there's a family there, you'll be asked if you want to evict them. Evicting them sells all their furniture and belongings, and then they'll just hang out in the barracks (the list of unhoused families) with their money. Either way, you'll get the lot cleared.
