Items

  • 1-Up: A green mushroom that offers you an additional life.
  • Life Mushroom: A red mushroom that can be found in most boss or miniboss levels that increases your health meter from 3 to 6. If you drop to 3, you will lose the ability.
  • Bee Mushroom: Allows you to become Bee Mario. Fly by pressing/holding/tapping A and watch your flight meter. Touch water, electricity or get hit by an enemy and you lose the ability.
  • Boo Mushroom: Allows you to become Boo Mario. Tap A to float, shake Wiimote to turn invisible and pass through walls. Touch electricity or get hit by an enemy and you lose the ability.
  • Spring Mushroom: Allows you to become Spring Mario. Bounces automatically in place. Hold A & release for a super spring jump. Touch water, electricity, or get hit by an enemy and you lose the ability.
  • Rock Mushroom: Allows you to become Rock Mario. Shake Wiimote to roll and mow over enemies, break crystals, or knock down upright walls. Can roll over ramps with extra speed. If you hit a wall, you will stop rolling. Touch water, electricity, or hit an enemy without rolling and you lose the ability.
  • Fire Flower: Allows you to become Fire Mario for a limited time. Shake Wiimote to release fireballs that burn through crates and defeat enemies. You will only lose the ability when time winds down.
  • Cloud Flower: Allows you to become Cloud Mario. You start with 3 clouds. Shake the Wiimote to release a cloud platform under you. Refresh the ability by touching another cloud flower (they refresh every few seconds). You lose the ability when you touch water, electricity, or an enemy.
  • Rainbow Star: Allows you to become Rainbow Mario for a limited time. Race through enemies unscathed.
  • Dash Pepper: Use with Yoshi to speed through a course for a limited time.
  • Blimp Fruit: A blue fruit that allows you & Yoshi to rise & float temporarily. Watch the air supply meter. Once meter is empty, you will fall.
  • Bulb Berry: A yellow fruit Yoshi eats that allows hidden paths to be revealed ahead of you for a limited time. Once time is up, any hidden path below you will disappear.
  • Spin Drill: Is carried and used to drill in soil or sand patches. Will be lost when hit by an enemy or entering a Launch or Sling Star.
  • Checkpoint (an auto-save point you restart from on death) Flag: A milestone that saves your place during a star level (a type of level within a galaxy) in case you lose a life. There are usually 2-3 flags per level, except daredevil or speed run levels. They are black & white with a Bowser logo and must be touched to activate, creating a red M or green L flag. Upon a game over, flags are reset and you must restart a level from the beginning.
  • Comet Medal: A large gold & white disk collected at each galaxy from one star level. Usually hidden and are sometimes challenging to reach. After World 3, they activate Prankster Comets.
  • Coin: Yellow currency. Collect 100 coins for an automatic 1-Up. A running total allows you to spend coins on Chance Cubes on the ship.
  • ? Coin: A large ? coin found sporadically in star levels or in pipe areas. Often reveal musical notes, that when collected in their entirety, reward 1-Ups.
  • Star Bits: Colourful crystals that can be shot at enemies or yellow dots for coins by using the B (trigger) button. Running totals allow you to spend Star Bits on Chance CUbes on the ship, feed Hungry Lumas within star levels & on the World Map, and offer a 1-Up for every 100 Star Bits collected.
  • Power Star (Yellow): Rewarded for completing a star level.
  • Bronze Star: Rewarded for using Rosalina's video preview of how to safely complete a star level. Must be upgraded to a normal (yellow) Power Star to count towards progressing in the game.
  • Grand Star: A giant star rewarded for defeating the dungeon boss at the end of each world.
  • Secret Star: A Power Star hidden in secret areas of a star level or for completing a task in a hidden area, such as a Chimp challenge.
  • Green Star: Hidden in 2-3 star levels in each world's galaxy.
  • Prankster Comets: Randomly appear in select galaxy star levels (starting after World 3) for every Comet Medal found. There are 6 types:
    • Speed Run: Complete all or a portion of a star level in a time limit. You may or may not be able to increase your time limit by collecting clocks found throughout the level.
    • Enemy Romp: A time limited challenge in which all enemies must be defeated. Often includes an attack item, such as a Fire Flower or Rainbow Star.
    • Daredevil: Complete all of a star level or defeat a boss or miniboss without losing a single health point (limited to 1) and often without the aid of Checkpoint Flags.
    • Purple Coin: Collect all or a certain amount of Purple Coins strewn about a star level or a course within a star level, such as a race. May or may not be within a time limit.
    • Cosmic Clone: Complete a star level with enemy clones following & retracing your every move, restricting any backtracking.
    • Double Time: Complete a star level where enemies move twice as fast or other rhythms, such as disappearing blocks, change twice as fast.
  • World Map: Accessed from the pedal aboard your ship, moving from world to world and galaxy to galaxy (within worlds).

Boss & Mini-Boss Strategies

World 1

  • Sky Station Galaxy - Peewee Piranha: Avoid his front end & spin at the egg to crack it, revealing a red balloon bottom. After 3 spins, he will restart & go at it again, this time faster. Search him out as he runs around & keep spinning at the backside to earn the star.
  • Yoshi Star Galaxy - King Lakitu: Get coins from the crystals when you need to. The point is to use the Spinies to launch at the boss. Avoid the electricity he uses after each hit. He will move a bit faster & throw m.
