Navigate Spelunky's Ice Caves with this guide. Learn about new traps like Landmines and enemies like UFOs and Yetis.
Walkthrough
- 1The Ice Caves are comprised of a single stage, similar to World 3, but the level timer is still active, necessitating quick traversal.
- 2Equipment that aids movement, such as the Parachute, is highly valuable. A ranged weapon is recommended, and the Camera can effectively deal with the two primary enemy types.
- 3The ground is a mix of ice blocks, which cause sliding unless Spike Shoes are equipped. Frequent jumping and using air control are key to managing slides.
- 4Dropped items also slide on ice, making precise item placement difficult. To drop an item with precision, hang from a ledge to achieve a perfect vertical trajectory.
- 5The stage is divided into three segments: an initial 4x4 grid, a backroom entrance to a static Yeti Kingdom (also 4x4), and a final 4x4 generated grid.
- 6There is an empty expanse between the top and bottom segments that causes significant fall damage. A safe spot to drop is directly below the backroom entrance. Hang from the block below the open side of the entrance, which is exactly 2 tiles over and 4 tiles down.
New Traps:
- Landmine: Activates when touched by anything alive or dead, or by Falling Platforms. It flashes, emits a tone, and explodes about one second later. Picking up a Landmine disarms it temporarily. They do not explode when hit by other explosions but can chain react.
- Spring Trap: Bounces you and other objects 5 tiles high.
- Ceiling Spikes: A one-hit kill if hit directly, often appearing above Spring Traps.
- The Abyss: Falling to the bottom of the level results in instant death.
- Ice Platform: These half-platforms melt when stood upon.
- Boulder: This is the Golden Idol trap. Triggered by explosions, it falls from a background statue and moves sideways, crushing blocks and objects. It bounces off level borders and will likely roll down the entire level. You can ride on top of the Boulder.
New Enemies:
- UFO: Has 1 HP. Flies side-to-side, firing lasers that deal 1 damage or destroy tiles. If within 8 tiles, it climbs to a level 2-4 tiles above you. Can be struck with the back of the whip at this range. Jumping on it from above or throwing items at it are effective. An Alien may eject and parachute to the ground when the UFO is falling.
- Alien: Has 1 HP. Walks side-to-side and periodically jumps.
- Yeti: Has 3 HP. Does not run but deals damage or throws you on contact. Being thrown deals 1 damage and stun. Immune to the whip; use jump attacks or thrown items. To get past a Yeti standing one tile above you, jump to its tile and move the shortest distance onto it, then jump to its head.
- Yeti Queen: Has 10 HP. Deals 2 damage on contact. Jumps toward you if within 8 tiles. Has an overhead attack for 2 damage if you attempt to jump on her head. Immune to the whip and Freeze Ray. Drops Spike Boots and a Rope Pile on death.
- Yeti King: Has 10 HP. Uses a roar attack within 8 tiles that freezes anyone in front of him, dealing 1 damage and stun from falling icicles. Has the same overhead attack and immunities as the Queen. Drops a Compass and Rope Pile on death, with a moderate chance to drop a Freeze Ray.
- Mech Rider: Has 10 HP. An Alien pilots this purple mech suit, which can be ridden after killing the pilot. Its primary attack chops tiles, and its crouching attack fires an explosive projectile. A weak jetpack allows it to fly upward a few tiles. It stuns you and explodes when it breaks down.

- Equip items that enhance movement like the Parachute or Spike Shoes.
- Use the Camera to deal with UFOs and Aliens.
- Be cautious of sliding on ice and use jumps and air control to navigate.
- When placing items precisely, hang from a ledge to ensure a vertical drop.
- Avoid the Abyss and Ceiling Spikes.
- Riding the Boulder can be a safe way to traverse parts of the level.
- For Yetis, use jump attacks or thrown items, and be mindful of their throw attack.
- The Mech Rider is powerful but dangerous; consider avoiding it unless necessary for destruction.
