In Phasmophobia, your primary goal is to identify the ghost, but completing secondary objectives offers significant rewards, enhancing your progression and providing additional challenges. These objectives add a layer of strategic depth to each investigation, pushing you to take calculated risks.

Beyond the core task of ghost identification, Phasmophobia presents players with several optional objectives that, when successfully completed, contribute to your overall earnings and experience points. These objectives encourage exploration, experimentation with equipment, and sometimes, a more daring approach to paranormal investigation. Understanding and prioritizing these tasks can greatly improve your success rate and financial gain.

Primary Objective: Ghost Identification

• Goal: To gather three pieces of evidence that uniquely identify the ghost type.
• Rewards: Successful identification earns the base payout for the investigation, which varies based on the map size and difficulty.

Secondary Objectives:

These objectives are randomly assigned at the start of each mission and vary in difficulty and risk. Completing them provides bonus money and experience points.

• Take a Photo of the Ghost: Requires a Still Camera and precise timing. The ghost must be visible and in frame for the photo to count. This can be challenging as ghosts are often fleeting.
• Use the Spirit Box: Requires the Spirit Box. You must ask a question and receive a verbal response from the ghost. This often requires being in or near the ghost's favorite room.
• Use the Ghost Writing: Requires a Book placed in the ghost's favorite room. The ghost must interact with the book and leave writing for the objective to be completed.
• Use the EMF Reader: Requires the EMF Reader. You must achieve an EMF Level 5 reading. This often means being in the ghost's favorite room or witnessing a paranormal event.
• Use the Thermometer: Requires a Thermometer. You must find freezing temperatures (below 0°C / 32°F). This indicates the ghost's presence and is a key piece of evidence.
• Witness a Ghost Event: Requires observing a paranormal event, such as the ghost manifesting visually, throwing objects violently, or making significant noise.
• Smudge the Ghost: Requires Smudge Sticks. You must light a smudge stick near the ghost to prevent it from hunting for a period. This is a defensive objective.
• Get a Sanity Reading: Requires a Sanity Monitor (often found in the truck). You must achieve a specific sanity reading, usually indicating low sanity.
• Find Fingerprints: Requires a UV Light. You must find fingerprints left by the ghost on surfaces like doors or light switches.
• Place a Parabolic Microphone: Requires a Parabolic Microphone. You must place it in the ghost's favorite room and have it detect unique ghost sounds.
• Find the Ghost's Favorite Room: This objective is often implicitly completed as part of identifying the ghost, but sometimes it's a standalone objective to simply locate the area of highest activity.
• Use the Salt: Requires Salt. You must place salt on the floor and have the ghost walk through it, leaving footprints.

• Money: Completing objectives and identifying the ghost earns you money, which is used to purchase new equipment, upgrades, and tools.
• Experience Points (XP): Each successful investigation grants XP, which contributes to your overall player level. Leveling up can unlock new maps and equipment tiers.
• Difficulty Scaling: As you progress, you'll unlock larger and more challenging maps, and the ghosts themselves may become more aggressive, offering greater rewards for overcoming these increased difficulties.
