Use Overlays: Don't just dig randomly. Utilize the overlays in the top right to understand temperature, decor, and other environmental factors before building.

Manage Temperature: Pay close attention to the temperature overlay. Keep sensitive areas like greenhouses and living quarters away from heat sources (generators, batteries) and cold spots. Use materials like granite for decor bonuses and igneous rock or abyssalite for thermal insulation in greenhouses.

Secure Food Sources: Start with Mealwood for easy early-game food, but be aware of its low quality and dirt requirement. Transition to Bristle Blossoms (Gristle Berries) for better nutrition, but note their need for water and light. Consider mushrooms as another option.

Prevent Food Spoilage: To prevent food from rotting, ensure your greenhouses are filled with carbon dioxide (germs need oxygen to survive) or store food in ration boxes within an ice biome, ideally also in CO2.

Control Dupe Count: Avoid the trap of having too many Dupes. Start with 3-4 and only increase the count when you have a surplus of food and resources. More Dupes mean higher demands for food, oxygen, and space.

Build Essential Rooms: Construct rooms like barracks for stamina regeneration and latrines to relieve stress. Managing Dupe stress is crucial for colony efficiency.

Basic Power and Ventilation: Establish a basic power grid, likely with a coal generator early on, to power essential facilities like lights for greenhouses. Ensure proper ventilation to manage gas levels.
