Mass Effect sniper rifle guide covering M-92 Mantis, M-97 Viper, M-98 Widow, and M-29 Incisor, including how to obtain them.

M-92 Mantis Sniper Rifle

This rifle is very effective against armor, but weaker against shields and biotic barriers. You obtain it by default at Freedom's Progress.

M-97 Viper Sniper Rifle

The M-97 Viper is a semi-automatic rifle with a higher ammo capacity. It is highly effective against armor and somewhat effective against shields and biotic barriers. You can obtain it on Illium after recruiting the Assassin.

M-98 Widow Anti-Material Rifle

This rifle is especially effective against armor, but also against shields and biotic barriers. It is a researchable upgrade only usable by the team member who suggested it, and/or usable by Soldier or Infiltrator if chosen as Advanced Weapon Training.

M-29 Incisor Sniper Rifle

The M-29 Incisor fires a 3-shot burst, designed to overload active defenses. It is not particularly accurate, similar to a zoomable M-4 Submachine Gun. This rifle is available only through the Digital Deluxe DLC (downloadable content — extra missions or items released after launch).

Tips
  • Consider the M-92 Mantis for its effectiveness against armor early in Mass Effect.
  • The M-97 Viper offers a balance of power and capacity for sustained engagements.
  • The M-98 Widow is a powerful upgrade, especially for Soldier or Infiltrator classes.
  • The M-29 Incisor is a specialized weapon for overloading defenses, but requires the Digital Deluxe DLC.
