Learn about Balloon Battle and Shine Runners, the two battle modes in Mario Kart DS. Get tips on how to win each mode.

In Mario Kart DS, you can choose between two battle mode games against computer players: Balloon Battle and Shine Runners.

Balloon Battle: The objective is to deplete opponents' balloons through attacks before they deplete yours. You start with one balloon, but can inflate up to two additional balloons by stopping and blowing into the DS microphone or touching the touch screen, for a total of three. When a balloon is popped by an attack, you can inflate a new one. Ramming opponents with a Mushroom boost is an effective way to steal their balloons without losing your own. The last racer with balloons remaining wins.

Shine Runners: In this mode, players are placed in an arena with several Shines scattered around. A timer counts down; when it reaches zero, characters with the fewest Shines are automatically eliminated, and the timer resets. To win, you must be the last racer remaining with the most Shines. Item boxes are present in the arena, allowing you to attack other players and knock away their Shines. This mode is a fun addition alongside the classic balloon battling.

Tips
  • In Balloon Battle, use Mushroom boosts to ram opponents and steal their balloons.
  • In Shine Runners, utilize item boxes to attack other players and reduce their Shine count.
  • Consistently collect Shines in Shine Runners to avoid elimination when the timer hits zero.
  • In Balloon Battle, remember you can inflate up to 3 balloons in total.
