Adequate staffing is crucial for surviving incidents. If a room is understaffed or empty during an incident, send Dwellers to manage it. For Raiders, stationing two well-armed Dwellers at the Vault Door is helpful, or send one or two Dwellers to the next closest room as backup.

On Exploring

The Wasteland outside your vault is vast. Sending Dwellers out for extended periods, potentially days if well-equipped, yields significant resources. For long trips, equip Dwellers with 10 Stimpaks and 10 RadAways; for shorter trips, at least 3 of each. Ensure they have good gear, prioritizing high Endurance with outfits like the "Wasteland Gear," and a strong weapon. Remember to keep some good weapons for vault defense.

When recalling Dwellers, their return trip takes half the time they were out. A 10-hour trip requires a 5-hour wait for their return. Check on them often to read their Adventure Logs, which contain some of the game's best writing. It's recommended to keep at least 2 Explorers in the Wasteland at all times to continuously acquire gear.

On Experimentation

Have fun and experiment with the game. Players often create vaults with self-imposed rules for added challenge or humor. For example, one player created a vault with no food or water rooms, discovering that starvation and thirst lower health to 20% and radiation to 50%, leaving Dwellers vulnerable. Dwellers in the wasteland, children, pregnant women, and those in the wasteland are immune to damage from radroaches, raiders, and fires. Low happiness does not affect Rush success probability.

In this experimental vault, only a power room, residence, science lab, and medbay were present, staffed by pregnant women. Men waited outside to immediately start new pregnancies when one ended. Other Dwellers explored the wastes, occasionally returning for Stimpaks and RadAways. This strategy allowed population growth and gear collection without consuming food or water, as Dwellers were effectively immortal within the vault due to the experimental setup.

Other popular player experiments include designating a "King" to impregnate all women, using absurd Dweller names, or creating Male Only/Female Only vaults. The goal is to play your way and enjoy the game, adding challenges or humor through unique play habits.

On Maintaining Your Social Life

It's important to balance playing Fallout Shelter with real life. Avoid letting the game consume your days. A common playstyle is to have the game open while working, collecting resources periodically and making important Overseer decisions when needed. Do not let the game rule your life.
