Learn how to optionally save Princess Gwaelin in Dragon Quest. This guide covers the path, the Green Dragon boss, and the reward you get.

So, you've decided you want to save Princess Gwaelin? Cool! Just know that this whole quest is totally optional. You don't *have* to save her to beat the game – defeating the Dragonlord is all that matters for the main ending. But, if you do save her, the ending is a bit different and, honestly, more satisfying in my book.

First things first, leave Tantegel. If you want to avoid random monster encounters on your way, cast Holy Protection. Your destination is the cave tunnel east of Tantegel – the same one you used to get to Rimuldar. Once you're inside, cast Glow so you can see, then make your way east and south. Stick close to the eastern wall until you reach a locked door. You'll need a Magic Key to open it. Keep going until you're just a few steps away from a dragon guarding a room entrance.

Quick Save here! Seriously, do it now. Then, walk up and talk to the dragon. Get ready for a fight.

After that battle, you'll have saved Princess Gwaelin! Now, about getting her back to Tantegel. You can use Evac or Zoom to warp back if you like. Once you're back, talk to the King. Princess Gwaelin will then give you the PRINCESS'S PLEDGE. Think of it as a medieval GPS – it'll tell you exactly how many steps north, south, east, or west Tantegel Castle is from your current location. It also conveniently shows you how much experience you need for your next level-up.
