The buyback mechanic in Dota 2 allows players to instantly respawn at their base at the cost of gold and a cooldown. This can be a crucial tool for turning the tide of a game, defending objectives, or making a desperate last stand.

Buyback Mechanics:

1. Cost: The cost of buyback increases as the game progresses. It is calculated as 100 gold plus 5 times the current buyback cost multiplier, which itself increases by 1 every 2.5 minutes.
2. Cooldown: Buyback has a cooldown that starts when a hero dies. The cooldown is 5 minutes, but it is reduced by 25% if the buyback was used to defend an objective (e.g., Ancient, Barracks, or Towers).
3. Gold Requirement: You must have enough gold to afford the buyback cost. If you do not have enough gold, the buyback option will be unavailable.
4. Usage: Buyback can only be used when a hero is dead. It is activated by pressing the buyback button in the bottom-left corner of the screen or by using the hotkey (default is 'Y').

Strategic Considerations:

• Defending Objectives: Buyback is most effective when used to defend your Ancient or Barracks, as it can prevent a game-ending push.
• Turning the Tide: A well-timed buyback can allow a team to re-engage in a fight and potentially win it, swinging the momentum of the game.
• Farming vs. Buyback: Players must balance the need to farm gold for items with the potential need for buyback. Sometimes, saving gold for a crucial item is more important than having buyback available.
• Enemy Buyback: Be aware of the enemy's buyback status. If key enemy heroes are on buyback cooldown, it can be an opportune time to push or force a fight.
• Buyback Cost Increase: As the game progresses, the buyback cost increases significantly. This makes buyback a more valuable resource in the late game.
