Learn how to customize your Diablo III character with active and passive abilities, and powerful runes. Discover build strategies and stat impacts.

Diablo III features a robust ability system that allows for deep character customization. Unlike previous Diablo titles, there are no talent points. Instead, players unlock and select a combination of active and passive abilities, along with runes, to create unique character builds.

Active Abilities: These are the skills you actively use in combat, mapped to your mouse buttons and keyboard hotkeys. You start with one active ability slot and unlock up to a total of six by level 19. Each active ability can be further modified by one of five distinct runes, which can alter its damage, area of effect, or even its fundamental mechanics, leading to vastly different playstyles even with the same base skill. Each class has around 25 unique active abilities, each with 5 runes.

Passive Abilities: These abilities provide constant, behind-the-scenes bonuses and effects. You can equip up to three passive abilities, with slots unlocking at levels 10, 20, and 30. Passives can enhance stats like armor based on dexterity or reduce ability cooldowns. They are crucial for fine-tuning your character's performance.

Runes: A core new feature in Diablo III, runes add a significant layer of customization. By selecting a rune for each active ability, you can dramatically change how that ability functions and even how it looks. This system ensures that even characters of the same class with the same active skills can have unique builds and appearances. Runes unlock as you level up and are fully available by the time you reach max level.

Other Stats: Beyond primary attributes, various other stats influence your hero's power. 'Detailed Stats' (accessed via a button) provides a comprehensive view. 'Magic Find' is a key stat that increases the chance of finding magical, rare, and legendary items. However, prioritizing Magic Find may require sacrificing offensive or defensive stats, presenting a strategic trade-off.
