A comprehensive guide to defending Mortain in Company of Heroes, detailing unit placement, defensive structures, and strategies to repel German assaults and earn the Army Expert Badge.
Walkthrough
- 1Begin by building defenses around the hill. Send two veteran rifle squads north to find and rescue trapped rangers. This will earn you a medal.
- 2Capture as many points as possible with your spare infantry. You have approximately 5 minutes before the enemy attacks. Build tank traps around Mortain and one MG emplacement behind the point. Station a squad near your main HQ for reinforcements.
- 3Surround the hill with tank traps and MG emplacements covering at least 3 to 4 critical entrances. Crew your AT guns and send MGs to the points by the medic tents. Garrisoning MGs in buildings on some points is optional but can increase their longevity.
- 4After a cutscene, German forces will attack from the right side of the map, spawning from the top and bottom. Reinforce these points with MG emplacements and at least one AT gun. Build a halftrack from the motorpool to act as a quick response anti-infantry unit and reinforce hot spots.
- 5German artillery will periodically bombard the hill. Watch for flare drops, evacuate the area temporarily, and return to defensive positions once the barrage stops. Replace lost units and watch for snipers accompanying the German assault force.
- 6Halfway through the mission, a howitzer will become available. Hotkey the howitzer and defend it with at least a rifle squad. The howitzer is a high-priority target for the AI, so strong defenses are crucial.
- 7If Mortain's defense is overwhelmed, use howitzers to target enemy positions attempting to capture the point, and send in the standby rifle squad from your HQ to clear remaining enemies.
- 8Your HQ will also come under attack periodically. Ensure your engineers build sufficient defenses at your HQ. The rescued rangers can assist in defending the HQ if necessary.
- 9Pick up any dropped Panzershrecks for your rifle squads to significantly boost their firepower.
- 10Enemy attacks primarily come in waves. Successfully repelling these assaults without heavy unit losses will help you survive. If the front line becomes untenable, abandon the points and consolidate your forces in the center of the hill, being mindful of German artillery. You only need to hold the hill for 30 minutes. With strong defenses, the Axis forces may begin retreating in the final minute.
