First Aid Skill Guide

Master First Aid in Blackfrost: The Long Dark II! Learn to prevent and treat injuries and diseases using items, plants, and equipment to survive the harsh wilderness. Your essential guide.

Hey there, survivor! So, you're venturing into the frozen wilds of Blackfrost, huh? It's a tough world out there, and staying alive means knowing how to patch yourself up. This is your guide to First Aid – think of it as your trusty medkit for the mind. Basically, 'First Aid' covers anything that helps you either stop bad stuff from happening (preventative) or fix you up when things go wrong (treatment). You'll find these items and more in their own special spot in the [Radial Menu](https://thelongdark.fandom.com/wiki/Radial_Menu "Radial Menu"), or you can grab them from your Pack. Just remember, the game doesn't pause when you're digging through your inventory, so be quick! ## Afflictions: What's Trying to Get You? Anything that makes you lose [Condition](https://thelongdark.fandom.com/wiki/Condition "Condition") or generally makes life harder is an affliction. There are a bunch of them, but they mostly fall into two camps: ### Injuries These are the nasty surprises from falling, getting into it with a wolf (or worse!), or just being out in the cold too long. The game will usually flash the injury name on screen and your character will definitely let you know they're hurt. ### Diseases These sneak up on you. You can often see your risk for certain diseases in your status screen. Eating raw meat from predators or chugging unsafe water? Yeah, that's a fast track to getting sick. Once you've caught something, you'll need to treat it to get back to feeling human. ## Administering First Aid: Patching Yourself Up Your main tool here is that [Radial Menu](https://thelongdark.fandom.com/wiki/Radial_Menu "Radial Menu"). Your current afflictions will be listed on the left, and you can select the right First Aid item to use. You can also use items straight from your inventory, but again, watch that clock! Here's a crucial tip: when you use a First Aid item, you'll get a menu to pick which affliction it's for. Using the wrong thing on the wrong problem *won't* work and you'll just waste your precious supplies. Make sure you're matching the treatment to the affliction. Sometimes you can have more than one of the same kind of problem, and you'll need to treat each one separately. Many issues have a couple of treatment options, but you can only pick one if you actually have the item. And don't forget, some things need time to heal even after you've used a treatment – you might need to rest or just wait it out. Afflictions vanish when they're cured. Some will just go away on their own after a while, but others will keep chipping away at your health, and you'll need to deal with them fast before they become deadly. ## First Aid Types: What to Use When ### Preventative Measures These are your 'better safe than sorry' items. They help stop problems before they start or reduce the severity. | Item | Prevents | Effect | |---|---|---| | [Antiseptic](https://thelongdark.fandom.com/wiki/Antiseptic "Antiseptic") | [Infection](https://thelongdark.fandom.com/wiki/Infection "Infection") | Reduces the risk of infection from an animal attack by 40% | | [Caffeine Pills](https://thelongdark.fandom.com/wiki/Caffeine_Pills "Caffeine Pills") | [Fatigue](https://thelongdark.fandom.com/wiki/Fatigue "Fatigue") | Gives 25 [Fatigue](https://thelongdark.fandom.com/wiki/Fatigue "Fatigue") and [Fatigue Reduced](https://thelongdark.fandom.com/wiki/Fatigue_Reduced "Fatigue Reduced") for 4 hours.
