Learn about the key figures in Yakuza 5, including Kazuma Kiryu, the Dragon of Dojima, and his adopted daughter Haruka Sawamura.
Kazuma Kiryu - Famed throughout the Tokyo underworld as the "Dragon of Dojima," Kiryu was an up-and-coming soldier in the Tojo Clan's Dojima family until he accepted a murder rap in order to protect his friend and was sentenced to a decade in jail. Upon being released, he gets caught up in a search for ten billion yen that went missing from the Tojo Clan. In the process he becomes the Fourth Chairman of the Tojo Clan, but at a terrible cost, so he gives up his yakuza life to live honestly with his adopted daughter, Haruka. Unfortunately, events keep pulling Kiryu back into the underworld, despite his intentions to separate himself. He has spent a lot of time and money to set up Sunshine Orphanage in Okinawa, helping orphans just like him.
Haruka Sawamura - Kiryu's adopted daughter, and the biological daughter of his true love, Yumi Sawamura. Kiryu first found nine-year-old Haruka in a bar full of gunned-down people, hiding behind the counter clutching a pistol. Having a clue to the missing ten billion yen, Kiryu takes her in and eventually adopts her. While she has nothing to do with the yakuza directly and is not a fighter, she is no stranger to danger, routinely getting involved in kidnappings and other hijinx. In the years since Kiryu adopted her, she has grown into a sweet yet confident young woman.
Makoto Date - A police detective who runs across Kiryu during the search for the ten billion yen, the two end up in an uneasy alliance as they go on adventures together. That alliance develops into genuine friendship over the years, even after Date left the police force, and then returned to it.
Goro Majima - A recurring antagonist in the series, despite being a member of the Tojo Clan like Kiryu. He's also a fan favorite. Majima is known as the Wild Dog of Shimano. He's a little bit unhinged and loves to fight Kiryu whenever he gets the opportunity. As the series progresses, he rises in status to become a major lieutenant in the Tojo Clan, and the patriarch of his own family.
Taiga Saejima - Introduced in _Yakuza 4_, his story actually begins quite a few years before _Yakuza 1_, in 1985. A member of the small Sasai Family in the Tojo Clan, Saejima attempts a major hit on the rival Ueno Seiwa clan in order to promote the status of his family. He then spends the next twenty-five years in prison, but escapes before his death sentence can be carried out to search for his old friend Goro Majima and his sister, Yasuko.
Shun Akiyama - Also introduced in _Yakuza 4_, Akiyama is a moneylender and the owner of Sky Finance. Able to keep businesses afloat that he deems worthy through loans with no collateral, Akiyama somehow manages to avoid going out of business. While he seems generally affable and laid-back, he also has a great desire to keep the relative peace in Kamurocho, and while he's not a yakuza himself, he does keep very close tabs on the dealings of the underworld.
Daigo Dojima - The current Sixth Chairman of the Tojo Clan. The son of Kiryu's old boss, Daigo was found by Kiryu in the second game and groomed to become the chairman he is now through his strength and charisma. His leadership has already been considerably tested, having to deal with an assassination attempt and a police corruption scandal.
