Voidtrain features a variety of core mechanics that players must master to survive and progress. These mechanics are introduced through a series of quests, divided into Story Quests and Additional Quests. Story Quests are generally mandatory for advancing the main narrative, though some tasks within them can be deferred. Additional Quests, often serving as tutorials, are optional and can be completed at any time and in any order without hindering overall progress.

The core mechanics revolve around resource gathering, crafting, research, and survival. Players will learn to collect resources from the Void, build essential structures like Research Tables, Smelters, Containers, and Workbenches, and research new technologies to unlock advanced items and abilities. Survival elements are also crucial, requiring players to manage resources effectively to maintain their train and character.
