The Plucky Squire introduces players to Jot, a squire from a children's picture book. The game begins with top-down, Zelda 1-esque gameplay within the book, featuring Jot's daily life and quests. The narrative takes a turn when the evil wizard, aware of his destined failure, casts Jot out of the book into the owner's bedroom, transforming him into a 3D render.

Players can then manipulate the book's pages and words to solve puzzles. For example, changing text like "A massive guard was blocking the way" to "A tiny ant was pushing a crumb" can alter the game's reality. The game transitions seamlessly between the 2D book world and the 3D real-world environment, with the latter featuring photorealistic detail.

While the core mechanics of interacting with the book are praised, the game also incorporates various mini-games, some of which are criticized for not fitting the established theme. These include sections resembling Super Punch-Out!!, Dr. Mario, rhythm games, and stealth puzzles.
