Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound offers several game modes designed to test your ninja prowess, from the narrative-driven campaign to intense, skill-focused challenges. Mastering each mode is key to unlocking the full potential of Ryu Hayabusa and earning valuable rewards.

Story Mode: The Path of Vengeance

Story Mode is the core experience of Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, following Ryu Hayabusa's quest for vengeance against the nefarious Black Spider Clan and their demonic allies. This mode is essential for understanding the game's lore, unlocking new abilities, and acquiring crucial equipment.

• Progression: Navigate through distinct chapters, each culminating in a challenging boss encounter. Initial chapters, like the "Forest of Whispers," serve as tutorials for basic combat and environmental traversal.
• Exploration: Keep an eye out for hidden paths and secret areas. In the "Ancient Temple Ruins" chapter, for instance, a crumbling wall near the second Shrine of Restoration often conceals a chest containing a Spirit of the Fiend, vital for increasing your maximum Ninpo.
• Collectibles:
  • Golden Scarabs: These shimmering beetles are scattered throughout each level. Collecting them allows you to purchase rare items and weapon upgrades from Muramasa's Shop. A common early-game location is behind the waterfall in the "River of Sorrows" section of Chapter 2.
  • Life of the Gods: Fragments that, when combined, permanently increase Ryu's maximum health. Look for them in destructible objects or as rewards for defeating mini-bosses. The first Life of the Gods fragment is often found after defeating the "Stone Golem" in Chapter 3.
  • Spirit of the Fiend: Similar to Life of the Gods, these fragments boost your maximum Ninpo capacity. Often found in more challenging, out-of-the-way locations or as rewards for completing optional combat encounters.
• Strategy: Prioritize learning enemy attack patterns. Early enemies like the "Ashigaru Grunts" are easily dispatched with basic combos, but later foes such as the "Shadow Ninjas" require precise dodges (using the Phantom Dash ability) and counter-attacks. Don't be afraid to use your Ninpo spells, especially Art of the Inferno, against groups of enemies or heavily armored opponents.

Mission Mode: Trials of the Dragon

Mission Mode offers a series of standalone challenges designed to test specific combat skills and strategic thinking. These missions are unlocked as you progress through Story Mode and provide excellent opportunities to hone your techniques and earn extra Karma points.

• Mission Types:
  • Time Attack: Defeat all enemies within a strict time limit. For "Trial of the Swift Blade" (unlocked after Chapter 4), focus on using area-of-effect Ninpo like Art of the Fire Wheels and quick weapon combos with the Dragon Sword to maximize efficiency.
  • Survival: Endure waves of increasingly difficult enemies. "Endless Onslaught" (unlocked after Chapter 7) is a prime example; stock up on Great Devil Elixirs and prioritize enemies that drop health orbs.
  • Boss Rush: Face off against a gauntlet of bosses from Story Mode. "Lord of the Fiends Gauntlet" (unlocked after completing Story Mode) requires intimate knowledge of each boss's weaknesses and attack patterns. Consider equipping the Armlet of the Sun for increased attack power.
  • Specific Weapon Challenges: Complete missions using only a designated weapon. "Flail Mastery" (unlocked after acquiring the Vigoorian Flail) demands proficiency with its unique crowd-control capabilities.
• Rewards: Completing missions awards Karma, which contributes to your overall Ninja Rank, and often unlocks new costumes or concept art in the "Gallery" section of the main menu. Achieving "Master Ninja" rank on a mission often grants a rare item, such as a Talisman of Rebirth.
• Actionable Tip: Before attempting a difficult mission, visit Muramasa's Shop to ensure your weapons are fully upgraded and you have a healthy supply of healing items like Great Spirit Elixirs and Devil Elixirs.

New Game+: Dragon's Legacy

Upon completing Story Mode on any difficulty, New Game+ becomes available. This mode allows you to restart the campaign with most of your acquired upgrades, weapons, and items, but with increased enemy difficulty and new challenges.

• Retained Progress:
  • All weapons and their upgrades.
  • All Ninpo spells and their levels.
  • All collected Golden Scarabs (though new ones will appear in different locations).
  • Increased maximum health and Ninpo from Life of the Gods and Spirit of the Fiend.
  • All costumes unlocked.
• New Challenges:
  • Harder Enemies: Standard enemies will have more health, deal more damage, and often appear in larger groups. New enemy types, such as the "Greater Fiend Archers," may also appear in earlier chapters.
  • Remixed Encounters: Some combat scenarios will feature different enemy compositions or environmental hazards. For example, the "Monastery Courtyard" in Chapter 1 might now include a "Berserker Fiend" alongside the usual Ashigaru.
  • Exclusive Items: Certain powerful accessories or weapon upgrades, like the Armlet of the Moon (increased defense), are only obtainable on New Game+ playthroughs on higher difficulties.
• Recommendation: New Game+ is the ideal way to tackle higher difficulty settings like "Very Hard" or "Master Ninja." Use your accumulated power to experiment with different weapon combinations and Ninpo strategies you might not have dared to try on your first playthrough.
