Liu Kang

Biography: Once a member of the super-secret White Lotus Society, Liu Kang left to represent all Shaolin temples at the tournament. He is aware of the evil behind Shang Tsung's tournament and has entered to defeat Shang Tsung and return the tournament to its noble origins.

Scorpion

Biography: Scorpion's true name and origin are unknown. He is believed to be a fallen ninja granted the opportunity to avenge his death at the hands of the Lin Kuei. He has a new body and a uniform that mocks the Lin Kuei with its yellow color.

Special Moves/Finisher:

• Spear: Tosses a spear horizontally. If it connects, the opponent is dragged back for punishment. Input: Away, Away, Punch. Statistics: 15.6% damage; 2,000 points.
• Teleport Punch: Quickly teleports behind the opponent and reappears, flying towards them in a Jump Punch position. Input: Towards, Down. Statistics: 9.4% damage; 2,000 points. This only hits if the opponent is in the air.
• Finisher: Rips off mask revealing a skull, then blows fire on the opponent, igniting them until they burn to a skeleton. Input: Towards, Towards, Towards, Block. Must be executed about half a screen away from the opponent.

Sub-Zero

Biography: The actual name and origin of this warrior are unknown. He is believed to belong to the Lin Kuei, a legendary clan of Chinese ninjas. He has mastered the element of cold; his deep freeze leaves an opponent at his mercy.

Special Moves/Finisher:

• Iceball: Tosses a ball of ice horizontally. If it connects, the opponent becomes frozen for about three seconds. Input: Away, Towards, Kick. Statistics: 0.0% damage; 0 points. Freezing an already frozen opponent reverses the effects, freezing you and unfreezing your opponent, displaying "DOUBLE ICE BACKFIRE".
• Slide: Slides towards the opponent with his front foot extended. Input: Towards, Down, Punch. Statistics: 15.6% damage; 1,000 points.
• Finisher: Slides across the screen and Punches the opponent. Input: Towards, Away, Towards, Punch.

Sonya Blade

Biography: Sonya Blade is a member of a top special forces unit. Her team was tracking Kano's Black Dragon to an uncharted island when they were ambushed by Shang Tsung's personal army. Tsung forced Sonya into the tournament by holding comrades hostage, making her own life and her companions' lives dependent on her performance.
