Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the fifth major installment of the Metal Gear Solid series, and takes place between Ground Zeroes and the original Metal Gear. It was originally teased as just The Phantom Pain in a trailer shown at Spike’s Video Game Awards show in December 2012, then actually revealed as a Metal Gear Solid title at the Game Developer’s Conference the following year.

Set nine years after the events of Ground Zeroes, Big Boss finally awakens from his coma, only to find out he’s being attacked by someone in the hospital. Thanks to the help of someone named Ishmael, as well as Ocelot, Big Boss escapes and becomes the leader of a new mercenary group called Diamond Dogs. It is now up to him and his new group to hunt down the enemies that destroyed the Militaires San Frontieres and left Big Boss for dead.
