Learn how to defeat the PUPA mech in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. This guide covers its attacks, weak points, and the crucial steps to take down this challenging boss.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Before you even start this mission, make sure you've brought the Supply Marker. You'll definitely need it. Also, pay close attention to Amanda's briefing files; she'll give you crucial intel on PUPA's weak points.
  2. 2
PUPA has a few nasty tricks up its sleeve. It uses its side rockets to charge directly at you, dealing massive damage. It also runs along walls, firing its rear-mounted machine guns. Keep moving side-to-side to dodge these. After the wall-run, it often follows up with another charge.
  3. 3
The mech also fires laser beams from its front. These are quick, so your best bet is to strafe to its sides to avoid them.
  4. 4
PUPA's most dangerous attack involves throwing small lightning rod pods onto the battlefield. It then discharges a massive electric shock that travels through these pods. To survive this, retreat to one of the corridors, plant some C4 near a rod, detonate it, and then immediately go prone. This should keep you safe.
  5. 5
If you find yourself running low on ammo, don't panic! Use that Supply Marker you brought. It'll drop ammo for the LAW and RPG2, plus a couple of Rations.
  6. 6
Once you've depleted all of PUPA's health bars, you'll need to shoot open the hatch on top of its head to get inside.
  7. 7
Inside the pod, you'll find memory boards. You need to remove them in a specific order: first the ones marked with an 'S', then the 'C' boards, and finally the 'M' boards. You're on a timer, so you might miss one of the 'M' plates, but don't worry too much – destroying it is part of the process.
  8. 8
After the cutscene, Huey will join Outer Heaven. Completing this mission unlocks the ability to create Support Supply Marker (Thrown), Chaff Grenades, and Night Vision Goggles. You'll also be able to use Outer Ops to send your soldiers on missions abroad.
Tips
  • Focus on destroying PUPA's side rockets and rear machine guns early on, as it uses them for two of its three main attacks.
  • Keep moving! Standing still is a death sentence against PUPA's relentless assaults.
  • Don't underestimate the lightning attack; it's PUPA's most damaging move. Use the C4 trick to avoid it effectively.
  • The Supply Marker is a lifesaver if you run out of ammo. Make sure you have it equipped and ready.
