Version 1.1 - The Whispering Wastes Expansion (PC Release)
Updated: 05/31/2001
This significant update primarily focuses on the introduction of the "Whispering Wastes" region, a vast and desolate new area accessible only to players who have completed the "Echoes of the Forgotten" questline. This expansion also brought a rebalance to the Karma system and several quality-of-life improvements.
New Content & Areas:
- The Whispering Wastes: A new, high-level zone accessible via the PC version after completing the "Echoes of the Forgotten" quest.
- Accessing the Wastes: After receiving the Wasteland Compass from Elder Theron in the Sunken City, head to the northernmost point of the Shrouded Mire. Use the compass near the ancient monolith to open a temporal rift.
- Key Locations:
- The Obsidian Spire: Central hub, contains the new vendor, Kaelen, who sells rare crafting materials like Void Shards.
- The Sunken Oasis: A dangerous area teeming with new enemy types, including the Sand Lurkers and Whisper Wraiths. Be prepared for environmental hazards like sandstorms that reduce visibility.
- The Crypt of Lost Souls: A challenging dungeon requiring the Runed Key, dropped by the mini-boss "Dreadfang" in the Sunken Oasis. Inside, you'll find the legendary artifact, the Heart of Aethel.
- New Questline: "Whispers of the Void"
- Initiated by speaking with the enigmatic figure, Lyra, found at the base of the Obsidian Spire.
- This questline involves retrieving three Void Crystals from specific locations within the Whispering Wastes: one from the Sunken Oasis, one from the Crypt of Lost Souls, and one from defeating the new world boss, the Abyssal Horror.
- Completing this quest grants access to the new "Void Weaver" skill tree, offering powerful new abilities focused on shadow manipulation and debuffs.
Karma System Rebalance:
- Increased Impact of "Evil" Choices: Actions resulting in Bad Karma now have a more immediate and noticeable effect on NPC reactions and available questlines. For instance, assassinating the Merchant Guild Leader in the Capital will now immediately lock you out of all merchant-related quests and reduce vendor prices by 50% due to fear.
- "Neutral" Karma Path Introduction: A new, less defined path has emerged. Players maintaining a balanced Karma score (between -100 and +100) will unlock unique dialogue options and access to the "Grey Market" vendor in the Capital's underbelly, offering exclusive items like the Cloak of Shadows.
Bug Fixes & Quality of Life:
- Resolved an issue where the "Shadow Step" ability would occasionally cause players to fall through the map in the Shrouded Mire.
- Fixed a bug preventing the "Ancient Tome" from spawning in the Elder's Library, blocking progression for the "Lost Knowledge" quest. The tome now reliably appears on the second shelf from the left, near the glowing blue lantern.
- Improved enemy AI pathing in the "Crimson Caves," reducing instances of enemies getting stuck on environmental objects.
- Optimized loading times when transitioning between major zones on all supported systems.
Version 0.4.1 - Minor Stability Patch (WII Release)
Updated: 08/07/2009
This patch primarily addresses stability and performance issues specific to the WII version of Karma: The Dark World, along with a few minor bug fixes.
Performance & Stability:
- Addressed frequent frame rate drops experienced during intense combat encounters in the "Whispering Woods" region.
- Reduced instances of game crashes when accessing the inventory menu immediately after a boss fight.
- Optimized texture loading for improved overall performance on the WII console.
Bug Fixes:
- Corrected a visual glitch where certain environmental textures would flicker erratically in the "Forgotten Temple."
- Fixed an issue where the "Spirit Orb" item would occasionally fail to register its effect when used, wasting a valuable consumable.
