Learn how to effectively use the Tension Gauge in Guilty Gear Strive, covering Overdrive Attacks, Dead Angle Attacks, Faultless Defense, and Instant Kills.

The Tension Gauge System is a crucial element in Guilty Gear Strive, often determining the outcome of matches. Mastering its intricacies is essential for high-level play.

Increasing Tension:

Your Tension Gauge fills by performing offensive actions such as attacking or advancing towards your opponent. The rate at which it fills varies per character, with more aggressive actions yielding faster increases. Using an Instant Block also grants a small amount of Tension.

The Tension Gauge has distinct phases indicated by color:

  • Blue: The first half of the gauge is filling. Tension can only be used for Faultless Defense.
  • Red: The second half of the gauge is filling. You can use Tension for one Overdrive Attack, one Dead Angle Attack, one Roman Cancel, or Faultless Defense.
  • Yellow: The gauge is completely full. You can use Tension for two Overdrive Attacks, two Dead Angle Attacks, two Roman Cancels, or any combination totaling two uses, or continue using it for Faultless Defense.

Overdrive Attack:

Similar to 'Supers' in other fighting games, Overdrive Attacks are a primary use of the Tension Gauge. They require at least 50% of the gauge to be filled. Each Overdrive Attack is character-specific.

Dead Angle Attack:

These are counter/reversal attacks that require 50% Tension. To perform one, block an attack on the ground, then press towards your opponent and any two buttons simultaneously during block stun. Your character will flash white and attack. This is useful for pushing opponents away or setting up combos. Be aware that Dead Angle Attacks have startup frames and can be blocked if used carelessly.

Faultless Defense:

This technique negates guard damage and pushes your opponent further away upon blocking. To perform it, hold back and press P+K. Holding b+P+K continuously drains Tension. If you have no Tension, Faultless Defense cannot be performed. It can also be used in the air to block many ground-based anti-air attacks that would otherwise hit during an air block. Remember to still block attack levels correctly (low, overhead, etc.) and be aware that you can still be thrown.

Instant Kill:

To enter Instant Kill mode, press all four attack buttons simultaneously. This turns your Tension Gauge into a timer. Once the timer depletes, your health meter becomes the timer, gradually decreasing your health until you perform the Instant Kill, revert the mode, or run out of health. A successful Instant Kill instantly wins the round. If missed or blocked, you lose all Tension for the rest of the round, preventing the use of Overdrive Attacks, Dead Angle Attacks, Roman Cancels, and Faultless Defense, and disabling further Instant Kill attempts.
